China Mistakenly Called by Taiwan's Name
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060420/ap_on_go_pr_wh/hu_visit_gaffe_1

WASHINGTON - The meeting between President Bush and Chinese President
Hu Jintao began with a gaffe Thursday when an announcer referred to China by the formal name of Taiwan, which China considers a rebellious province.

As Bush and Hu stood at attention outside the White House, an announcer said, "Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of the Republic of China, followed by the national anthem of the United States of America."

"Republic of China" is the formal name of the island 100 miles off the Chinese mainland. China is known formally as the People's Republic of China.

Taiwan is a most delicate issue for China. Beijing claims sovereignty over the self-governing island, which split from the mainland in 1949 as civil war ended on the mainland.

18. China and Its President Greeted by a Host of Indignities

By Dana Milbank
Friday, April 21, 2006; Page A02

... The visit began with a slight when the official announcer said the band would play the "national anthem of the Republic of China" -- the official name of Taiwan. It continued when Vice President Cheney donned sunglasses for the ceremony, and again when Hu, attempting to leave the stage via the wrong staircase, was yanked back by his jacket. Hu looked down at his sleeve to see the president of the United States tugging at it as if redirecting an errant child.

Then there were the intentional slights. China wanted a formal state visit such as Jiang got, but the administration refused, calling it instead an "official" visit. Bush acquiesced to the 21-gun salute but insisted on a luncheon instead of a formal dinner, in the East Room instead of the State Dining Room. Even the visiting country's flags were missing from the lampposts near the White House ...

20. All that and corporate media
gets their bloomers in a knot over a woman yelling????

Did you catch Craig (can't remember his last name) on 'Countdown' saying the Chinese probably think the yelling woman was intentional after all the other f*ck-ups.

25. she had done similar before
I guess the same woman had done similar to Jiang Zemin 5 years ago. She is from the Epoch Times, a weekly Chinese language paper that is either operated by Falun Gong, or strongly supports them... heck, every time I see a new copy of it lying around, I pick one up for my wife to read.

21. Check out this last paragraph: Hu talks in code....
"Last came the unofficial state luncheon. After the butter heirloom corn broth and the ginger-scented dumplings had been consumed, Hu rose with a toast that proclaimed he and Bush had "reached a broad and important agreement on China-U.S. relations."

The "broad and important agreement" they reached on China-US relations is that China's about to kick our butts -- he's saying that he's ready to throw down, I think.

9. it's more then just niceties..
the official government of china until 1949 was chiang kai-shek's nationalist regime, no matter how corrupt or phony it was, it was the recognised authority.....when it fled to formosa (taiwan)it took much of the chinese government records-and claimed it was the 'government' of china, though it only rules taiwan by then. It's incredible how few people recognise the potential disaster in this scenerio-a colossus country ruled by a government born in revolution which sees a 'province' which has the gall to claim it remains the only legitimate government! This sets up a situation where the only solution is to have taiwan(RC) rejoin the PRC and submit to its authority. The 2 china solution, which has been used til now, backed by US/western nuklar power, cannot work much longer...In a way, it's as inplacable a mess as the Israel/Palestinian situation. When watching China buy up the US debt, people should remember this; the PRC sure does!
Bush is such a fukking dupe-he should not be the man who's the decider of solutions to prroblems like this

It would be like bush et. al to slip in a sneaky dig at communist China. Same thing with the heckler.

19. If it indeed was a "dig at the communists"
and not just a mix-up (the probability is higher though), then it was a good one! Aside from the minor diplomatic embarrassment, from which nothing will come anyway, I'm never against heckling the communist chinese. I stand with Taiwan.

22. Nope, it wasn't a "mistake". You're right.
Bush wants this country to fall economically, so PNACsters can declare martial law. Why do you think Brown & Root got that $500 mil contract to build all those concentration camps in the U.S.?

Bush's plan is right on schedule. I hope Hu is smart enough to not fall for it, and find some way to punish only bush, and watch bush's dreams of a dictatorship fall away.

26. These lying bastards think the US public is dumb as dirt!
"Wilder pleaded for understanding. "Some people today want to see a quick fix to the trade imbalance," he explained. "But in the new global economy there is no quick fix."

The whole fucking selling point of "globalization" that was pounded at us 24/7 in the build up to globalization was that it would allow the "quick fix". We were told over and over, like we were dim-witted children, that globalization would allow for quick response and fast adjustments in the ever expanding and complex world of blah, blah, blah. Now they tell us, "Hey, there is no quick fix"! Lying, cheating, stealing, murdering sons of bitches!
