ahead of the projected impact.

Teevee only gave me about 15 minutes. Someone at the SF Hall of Justice wasn't watching the fax machine.

I think we're okay. But will monitor the news.

13. Don't take this as fact

But I don't think there is going to be a tsunami risk:
1) The USGS doesn't have anything on their site indicating a possible risk
2) The quake was fairly far inland, tsunami only happen when there is significant water displacement due to landslides or actual seafloor movement.

ON EDIT: Even if there was a tsunami, most of the energy would be dissipated as it traveled past the Aleutian Islands. If there is a tsunami, the largest hazard areas would be in the Bering Sea: the east coast of the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Aleutian Island arc, and the West coast of Alaska.

Major earthquake hits distant Russian Far Eastern region

MOSCOW (AP) — A major earthquake hit a distant region of Russia’s Far East on Friday, causing unknown damage and casualties, an emergency official said. The U.S. Geological Survey and Japan’s Meteorological Agency estimated the quake’s magnitude at 7.7.

The quake struck at 12:25 p.m. local time in the Koryak region, nearly 4,350 miles east of Moscow and some 620 miles north of the largest city in the area, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, said Oleg Kotosanov, a duty officer with the regional emergency situations ministry.

The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906, which destroyed more than half of the city’s buildings and left between 3,000 and 6,000 people dead 100 years ago this week, was estimated at a magnitude of between 7.7 and 7.9.

April 17, 2006 — NOAA finished installation of five Deep-ocean Assessment and Reporting of Tsunami (DART) buoy stations off the East and Gulf coasts and the Caribbean as part of the expansion of the U.S. tsunami warning system. The latest buoy station, off New Orleans, joins stations off Charleston, S.C.; Miami, and two off San Juan, Puerto Rico. Completing a three-week deployment mission aboard the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System ship SEWARD JOHNSON, the fifth station was deployed Saturday.

"These buoys are a first line of defense in providing citizens of the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf regions with a comprehensive tsunami warning system." said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. "The DART stations are an advanced technology that will help to protect densely populated, highly attractive tourist destinations in these regions as well as protect their significant economic resources."

The DART system was designed and built by NOAA to provide real-time tsunami detection as the waves travel across the open ocean. The newly installed stations are a more robust DART II, equipped with advanced two-way satellite communications that allow forecasters to receive and retrieve critical data. NOAA expects the network to total 39 DART II buoy stations by 2008 (32 in the Pacific and seven in the Atlantic Basin).

Shiveluch, Kamchatka's northernmost active volcano, has erupted a 8,000-meter-high pillar of ash.

The eruption, which took place at 7.26 a.m. local time and which was accompanied by an earthquake that lasted 4.5 minutes, produced an ash cloud, which could be seen at a height of about 1,000 m above the crater for more than an hour, reported the Kamchatka seismological expedition.

A photo from a spacecraft provided by the USA's Alaska-based volcanological observatory shows a clearly discernible extensive thermal anomaly. Seismological stations are registering spasmodic volcanic quakes.

Shiveluch (3,283 m high) reactivated after a long calm this January.

At the moment, the volcano is not dangerous for the settlements of the peninsula. Its activity only threatens the peninsula's transport communications with mudflows.
