I was in undergrad with two of them...just graduated with them in '04. I know this is somewhat local news, but I have to post it somewhere b/c I'm still in shock. Garth and Zach, you will be missed.

1. This is so terrible - their poor families
So sad, you send your kid to college, a talented, gifted kid, and they die like this. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and you, too.

3. The two I knew
really and truly were talented. I mean, phenomenally so. Never in a million years would I have imagined their lives being cut so short.

9. I'm so sorry.
Any loss of a young person is rotten, but ones who would have given the rest of us so much.....we don't even know how much we've lost.

13. IU has the music department Juilliard wishes it could be
I've produced some recordings with IU grads, including a couple of Josef Gingold's violin students. Juilliard produces technically terrific players. IU produces musicians.

17. What a tragedy
I pray for their families.

I sent this article to some of my friends with the remark that I would never get in a private plane (think JFK Jr., etc.)

We brought our daughter down to IU last month to tour the campus. Our freshman question and answer session was in the School of Music, which has 99% perfect acoustics. What a gorgeous campus!

19. It's so different when news like this touches you directly
Edited on Fri Apr-21-06 10:28 PM by rocknation
and I guess it says a lot about DU that when it touches one of us, it can touch us all.

I saw an Amercia's Most Wanted segment about a young TV station reporter who was murdered. They showed footage of the "professional" anchorwoman fighting back her tears while asking for help on the case and the anchorman just sitting there too choked up to say anything. I thought, "But they report news about people being killed EVERY DAY..."

My condolances as both a DU-er and a musican, and I hope you will tell us more about your former classmates.

:(

22. what i'm learning, sadly,
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 01:40 AM by melnjones
is how little I knew about them other than their music. I didn't know them that well, as I only studied music for two years before realizing that wasn't what i wanted to do with my life. It's been 3-4 years since I had talked to either one, and we were never more than good aquaintances. All the same, I'm looking at this whole situation thinking, how sad that I didn't know them as PEOPLE. I knew them as what their future careers would be. I mean, look at this link http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=4802138&nav=menu188_2 . Look at their bios. I'm mad that I spent two years with them and can't tell you anything more about them than their music abilities, and I'm mad at myself for it. We forget to make PEOPLE our priorities sometimes. I wish I had made getting to know them as people a priority. What power there can be in a simple conversation. I had one non-music conversation with Zach on a trip to Chicago that we took for a sociology class...That's the conversation I remember when I think of him. We talked about the future, and how our lives might impact those around us. How might we all have been impacted if we were only willing to be in community with each other? That's the worst loss for me, far worse than the loss of musicians- it's the loss of the lives behind the music that I never took the time to know. I'm not sitting here beating myself up for it, but I am mourning.

24. How horrific. Words seem inadequate...
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 01:55 AM by Jazz2006
Words seem so inadequate in the face of something like this but I hope and wish for you that the good memories you hold of your friends and the sure knowledge that others (friends, family, acquaintances and people here at DU, whether long time friends or newbies like me) genuinely feel for you, will bring you comfort in such terrible circumstances, melnjones
