Dean says Bush "cut and run" on Katrina

Sat Apr 22, 2006 02:13 PM ET

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said on Saturday the Bush administration had "cut and run" on Gulf Coast hurricane recovery and created a political legacy of deficits, divisiveness and deceit.

Dean, speaking at the Democratic National Committee's spring meeting, said November's congressional elections would be a choice between real change from Democrats or more of the same from Republicans. "There has been enough of fear, incompetence and corruption," Dean told DNC members. He said voters would judge President George W. Bush's administration and the Republicans on their slow response to Hurricane Katrina and failure to develop a suitable recovery plan.

"Republicans have cut and run when it comes to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, and we will not do that," he said. The Democrats chose New Orleans for their spring meeting in part to highlight the administration's heavily criticized handling of Katrina, which killed more than 1,300 people, displaced hundreds of thousands of people and shattered New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dean said Democrats offered values based on community and opportunity and a more inclusive vision for the future. "I think Americans are tired of being lectured to by Republicans who have brought a culture of corruption, cronyism and incompetence to Washington," he said. "They offer a legacy of more of the same -- deficits, divisiveness and deceit."

2. Dean, like John Kerry,
has a gift for stating the obvious - long after the obvious has become history.

4. Katrina's history. The Dem's dedication is current.
Maybe you missed what Dean was really talking about. It's about tomorrow's efforts, not yesterday's hurricane. To simply treat the disaster as something that's come and gone and now off the radar is to be an adminstration official.

25. Yes! DEAN is coming on strong

He was always saying stuff like this but now he is coming in for the Ali Punch, and his audience is listening.

Keep um coming Dean! Don't Stop!

The Democrats need to take a lesson from The Greatest of them all Ali!

He just kept dancing and taunting his foes and then he would land the KNOCK OUT Punch.

We need to start really coming on strong now and get the MEME words rolling.

They are going down if we just get a spine and speak UP!

Keep those words STRONG and Memorable.

Hit these sorry SOBs where it hurts -- in their VANITY.

Ridicule, derision, making Chucklenuts the butt of all national jokes (as opposed to making him the National Butt, which he already is). Works for me!

14. CALCULATED RIDICULE IS THE KEY.
Republican support is emotional and religious. We must demean, denigrate, castigate and ridicule to an extreme never before seen.

"cut and run" is perfect.

18. Dean Says Republicans Offer `Deficits' and `Deceit' (Bloomberg)
Dean Says Republicans Offer `Deficits' and `Deceit'
(Update2)

April 22 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean said Saturday that George Bush, his chief adviser, Karl Rove, and Republicans in Congress offer Americans ``deficits, divisiveness and deceit,'' and predicted Democrats will retake the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in November.

``Six months from today, Americans will be asked one simple question: Do you want more of the same Bush and Republican policies or do you want change?'' Dean said at the spring meeting of the Democratic National Committee in New Orleans. ``The Democratic Party offers the American people the change they are looking for.''

The Democrats chose New Orleans for their three-day meeting to emphasize, according to Dean, that ``Republicans have cut and run when it comes to rebuilding the Gulf Coast. We won't.''

Dean yesterday donned a white Hazmat suit and brown and yellow work gloves to help gut a storm-ravaged home in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward so that it can eventually be restored.

The ward is still largely without power eight months after Hurricane Katrina hit and Vincent Copper, 68, the owner of the home, stood by Dean and said help had ``been slow'' in coming. ``Rome wasn't built in a day,'' Copper said.
