Maoists urge on Nepal protesters

Nepalese Maoist rebels have joined protesters in rejecting King Gyanendra's democracy plan after another big rally in Kathmandu.

"The sea of people on the streets proves that the Nepali people want to get rid of the feudal regime forever," they said in a statement.

<snip>

In their statement, the Maoists described the royal offer as "a show of feudal arrogance and an insult to the great human sea that has taken to the streets".

The rebels effectively control much of rural Nepal.

1. The Maoists aren't stupid. That's less bullets aimed at their chests.
A few civilian human shields are no big deal in the big picture after all.

2. Fucking Maoists. Real humanitarians, there. Jesus, I guess the news
doesn't travel fast in Nepal. Hey, guys: Maoism is fucking stupid, and everyone in the world except you has figured that out by now!

5. Well, Maoism, has been a BIG success everywhere it's been tried,
hasn't it? So, yeah, I guess I could be wrong. Along with the couple hundred million Chinese who died from it. I guess they were wrong too.

7. Do you know what the rebels are fighting for and what they plan to do?
Or do you just see the word "Mao" and think negative thoughts? Considering this King we have here, perhaps the Maoists are not so wrong as you'd say.

And "couple hundred million Chinese" died? Wtf?

13. Because?
1. Chinese Human Rights suck
2. The non-existant Democracy (a one-party state does not consitute a Democracy)
3. The abject poverty that exists
4. The ruthless way the Chinese Government deals with dissent

Let's also take a look at two Asian states one that China supported and one it is still supporting today:
1. The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia
2. North Korea

14. They will probably put their own plans into motion and not
copy the Khmer Rouge (idk what gives you that idea).

15. Because their past behavior suggests quite strongly that they will
In the areas in the countryside that they control they have used tactics that look an awful lot like a mix of Khmer brutality combined with Latin and Sputh American Death Squads.

17. Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution aren't bad ideas?
Maybe it's just me but I consider millions dead and severe domestic repression on every level to be things that shouldn't be emulated.

6. What are you going to do, send American troops to yet another war?
Iraq is the big black hole that sucks all of our military assets, and Bush wants another war in Iran.

9. Where did I say anything about sending in troops?
Like it or not, tha Maoists rebels in Nepal are not some group of happy sweet people who are only looking out for the best interests of the poor in Nepal. They have run a ruthless campaign against the government. The tactics they have used in areas they control are a mix between Khmer methods in Cambodia and Death Squad tactics in Latin and South America.

I have no idea where you come up with your subject line "What are you going to do, send American troops to yet another war?"

Sources for my information on the Maoists Rebels in Nepal:

1. MBC television (Korea)
2. KBS Television (Korea)
3. Asia-Pacific Television (Australia-Canada)

16. good post.
Just some background, I have a friend from a small village in the east of Nepal. He went to college in Katmandu, and now he's an American citizen. The Maoists in Nepal are not some benevolent group of people looking out for the well being of the citizens of Nepal. The continuously kidnap and kill people at the drop of the hat if they can get money out of it. People in smaller villages are under threat from bands of Maoists looking for new support made through fear or money.

The protesters in the city and the prachanda (the maoists), are two distinct groups. The prachanda have used the protesters as leverage.

20. The poster was concerned that the Maoists would take power
without mentioning the caste system and the economic injustices that gave rise to the Maoists rebellion. One can only surmise that the poster wanted an outcome different from what appears to be inevitable: abdication and revolution.

I will point out that the US has raised the alarm bells about the military situation in Nepal. It is only our being militarily overstretched by Bush's anti-Islam crusade that has prevented us from providing increased levels of military assistance to the Nepalese.

19. What we have here is a situation similar to the end of the Shah
You have a very unpopular monarch with virtually no support from the people, but you also have a group of extremists hiding within the people hoping to take power once the monarch falls. In Iran, they succeeded, and the progress acheived by the revolution was completely nullified.

Let's hope the people of Nepal don't fall for the same thing, and can topple the King without failing to block the Maoists from filling the void.

21. The extreme poverty of the countryside
In the rural rural areas of nepal, that one sees whilst
trekking, the poverty is rather extreme. Life is hard and
rather unchanged by modern times, hill farming in terraced
fields, hard manual labour. Even kathmandu has an average
male lifespan of 51 years... a sign of how toxic the poor
dump has become, however sacred some mountains in the area
may be.

Then people have nothing to lose, and the violence is intense
and revolutionary, if you can imagine the US waiting until
today to consider rebelling against the King.

The stupid king should go before he is beheaded by his worthy
opponents. The sooner he gives way to centrist common sense,
the better, as the countryside thugs ("maoists") are no blessing.
