Bomb squad called in as protesters greet Bush in California

By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer
Last Updated 7:00 pm PDT Saturday, April 22, 2006
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A bomb squad was called in Saturday, after a man dropped a knapsack in a crowd of protesters outside a building President Bush was touring. Authorities later said it appeared to be a "sophisticated hoax device."

West Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Henry Serrano said the man dropped the knapsack in the middle of a street outside the California Fuel Cell Partnership, where Bush was giving an Earth Day talk on hydrogen fuel technology.

The suspect then ran into the crowd of about 1,500 protesters. Police who caught him said he appeared intoxicated and refused to identify himself.

The bomb squad later blasted the knapsack with a water cannon, and no explosives were found.

The bag, however, contained wires, junction boxes and heavy metal components fashioned "in a way that would lead one to not rule out that it was an explosive device," Serrano said. It appeared to be a sophisticated hoax, police said.

2. many upset that Bush came on Earth Day:

...Saturday's protest was otherwise peaceful, but demonstrators were no less angry with the president's visit to the area.

Yolo County Supervisor Mariko Yamada said she was insulted Bush chose to celebrate Earth Day in her largely Democratic and environmentally conscious county, home of the "nuclear free zone" in the city of Davis.

"I just actually find it astounding and outrageous that he would come here on Earth Day," Yamada said. "He's got one of the worst environmental records of all presidents in the last two to three decades."

Many of the protesters, who were forced to gather several hundred feet from the building, said they were unfazed that they were kept away from Bush's

Langberg: Bush speech was long on dreams, short on specifics

By Mike Langberg
Mercury News
President George W. Bush draws a laugh from John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems during a discussion on the American Competitiveness Initiative on Friday.

......
The invitation-only audience of 300 Cisco employees and Silicon Valley executives was, of course, eager to hear how math, science and engineering will keep America strong.

And Bush stayed far away from any unpleasant details, such as how exactly the federal government will pay for his promised programs, or whether Congress will stand in the way.

The president often comes across as awkward and inarticulate on national television, but the Cisco event shows the White House has discovered a formula that highlights his folksy charm.

..........

Bush delivered a long pitch for his competitiveness agenda, unveiled in his State of the Union speech on Jan. 31, breaking it up with occasional jokes.

Protesters turn out in force

HUGE CROWDS CALL FOR END TO WAR, FORCE VENUE CHANGE FOR STANFORD EVENT
By Linda Goldston and Lisa Krieger
Mercury News

From mothers pushing babies in strollers in San Jose near Cisco Systems, to students blocking a road at Stanford University, more than 1,500 protesters greeted President Bush's Friday arrival in the Silicon Valley.

Their messages -- and their signs -- varied widely at times, but the common theme of the day was clear: End the war with Iraq and bring the troops home.

``Why are we in Iraq? Why is there no exit strategy?'' asked Karen Meredith of Mountain View, whose son, Lt. Ken Ballard, was killed two years ago in Iraq. ``When did `peace' become a bad word?''

So many protesters gathered at Stanford -- more than 1,000 -- that a reception for Bush at the Hoover Institution was moved at the last minute to the campus home of former Republican Secretary of State George Shultz after students blocked the road leading to Hoover, an on-campus, conservative think tank where Schultz had organized a reception.

17. Obviously, I've missed a memo. WHAT "folksy charm?"
All I ever see is a smug, arrogant, spoiled, rich, whiny frat-boy. If he's ever displayed any "folksy charm," I've missed it entirely.

I don't want to have a beer with him. I don't want to meet him. I don't want to hear him. I don't want to see him. I don't want to be anywhere around people like him.

It's not that I "don't suffer fools gladly." I've just reached the age where I don't suffer fools at all.

10. So in other words, to the government, protestors = assassin threat?
And that's the justification for absolutely everything they do re: security?

11. "The dreamer-in-chief, having spared his audience any harsh realities"

http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/14404635.htm

....Bush's biggest applause line came near the end, after engineering student Shokouh said that his parents had immigrated to the United States from Iran.

``I love America,'' Bush declared. ``Our soul is renewed when people escape societies that can be really repressive and have a son like Arash who sits here with the president and a governor talking about dreams.''

``This is a country that has always sought to be a place where people can dream big dreams,'' declared Bush.

The dreamer-in-chief, having spared his audience any harsh realities, then walked off the stage and spent 15 minutes working the room -- shaking hands and posing for pictures.

13. Re: that particular 'protestor' created a huge security blitz
And doing the rest of the well-intended protest group a huge disservice, to put it mildly. Makes you wonder who sent him.

Hopefully there will be some follow-up on the guy being hammered for creating a scare and inviting heavy secruity to all future events.

18. But no one called the bomb squad when the WTC was blown to smithereens!
Where was the bomb squad on or after 9/11 in New York?

What's the use of having bomb squads if they aren't used when over 2,000 people are killed by explosives in Lower Manhattan?

19. an agent provacateur perhaps ?
it certainly wouldn't be the first time the police have done such things. they often 'target' a protestor whom they grab who later turns out to be an undercover cop in an attempt to provoke a violent reaction.
