Tories say they won't lower flags every time soldiers die in Afghanistan
Canadian Press

Sunday, April 23, 2006

OTTAWA (CP) - The flags are continuing to fly high over Parliament Hill and government buildings in the nation's capital despite the deaths of four Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

The newly elected Conservative government will no longer lower the flag to half-mast every time a Canadian soldier is killed, saying the automatic flag-lowering was a break with tradition by the Liberals.

"We have returned to the 80-year tradition of remembering all casualties of war or operations on one day - Nov. 11th," Defence Minister Gordon O'Connor said.

"We've just returned to a tradition."

Four Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan Saturday near Gumbad, about 70 kilometres north of Kandahar.

8. the original word for "Tory" was "Cavalier"
Cavalier is the word that preceded the term Tory, which was used to describe the Royalists who supported King Charles I in the war against Parliament. The bad connotation of that word (in uncapitalised form) still survives as something denoting arrogance and haughtiness, a self-important inconsiderate who cares more for his personal glory and vanity than for the welfare of his fellow man.

2. Don't expect us Canuks to be happy with that decision Stevie-baby
.

.

We realize that more Canadians will die than ever before,

now that our government has taken us out of the peace-keeper's role,

and made our military another poodle for the USA to hide behind.

(sigh)

3. Harper doesn't want to have the reminder of deaths broadcast this way
It's a bit like Bush hiding the flights with the caskets from the public.

4. Harper is so out of touch with how Canadians feel and think
I am not surprised he has done this, another nail in the coffin of his minority AND temporary government.

5. I'm changing my prediction on Harper staying in power
It was 18 months, now I'm changing it to 12 months.

He'll lose control of the minority government by February 2007.

9. Tradition is good, standing up for long held principles is good too.
Principles like strong business ethics and good traditional morals help lead a prosperous country. I'm sure Canadian service members know just how much bullshit this all is, same as their American counterparts. Maybe we can ALL (North America) get fed up with this farcical imperialism AT ONCE! I know South America is all but ready to join in! Canuks, Mexicans, Americans one and all - North Americans - fuck these people and their rampage across OUR continent! Let's take it back, ALL of it!

well then... how about the canadian public return to a tradition too. of electing a LIBERAL government!

but seriously, what a disgrace. i guess they are yet AGAIN trying to be like bush and sweep those icky deaths under the rug.

on edit: i expect it will take till monday before they 'rethink' this decision. only question is WHO will they blame?

14. Scary Omen...
What do these Tory scum know that we don't know...

How many more deaths are they projecting? Did Harper give Bush a 'green light' to Canada's role in any future expansion/genocide plans?

Obviously they are afraid that a constant public reminder of it; by constant, I mean, at half-mast more often than not...

16. Part of the 'Bushification' of the military
When I first heard the words "cut and run" when applied to CANADIAN soldiers, I started to worry.

Now, the Tories are all over TV and radio screaming about "defeating the terrorists".

Now this.

I'm hearing a lot of people say that this isn't our war to begin with and now we're taking the causualties for it.

We've got to take action. I don't want this to become another Somalia.

19. The right wing elitists are the same everywhere.
They have little regard for the military.

They think soldiers are lucky to have died for the upper crust.
