7 Car Bombs Explode in Baghdad, Killing 6

Baghdad's first car bomb exploded during morning rush hour on a major street near the Tigris river, close to a complex of government buildings, a hospital and a bus station. Three people were killed and 25 wounded.

Two hours later, bombs hidden in two cars parked near Mustansiriya University in eastern Baghdad exploded, killing three civilians, including a 10-year-old boy, and wounding 22 people, said police Lt. Bila Ali.

A car bomb also exploded near a square near a U.S. military convoy in central Baghdad, wounding at least 11 civilians, including a young girl, said police Maj. Abbas Mohammed Selman. U.S. forces closed off the area, and it was not immediately known if there were American casualties.

Bombs in two cars parked about 100 yards apart then exploded one after another near Iraqi police patrols in the New Baghdad part of the capital, wounding three policemen and three civilians, said police Lt. Ali Abass.

1. Stop reporting the bad news!
Those weren't explosions. They were celebratory fireworks to commemorate the establishment of the new Iraqi government. Of course one has to be careful when using fireworks as each year a number of people are injured as is clearly the case here. Also transporting large caches of fireworks by automobile is unwise.

12. At Least Twenty Killed by Baghdad Car Bombs
At Least Twenty Killed by Baghdad Car Bombs
Twenty Bodies Discovered Elsewhere

Washington Post Foreign Service

BAGHDAD, April 24 -- Iraq's insurgent movement on Monday delivered a violent reminder that it is still a force to be reckoned with, despite recent political progress that Iraqi and U.S. officials hope will lead to greater stability in the war-ravaged country.

Seven car bombs exploded in the capital on Monday morning, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 100, according to police officials and news reports. Across the country, bombs, shootings and mortar attacks killed at least 12 others, and Baghdad police discovered the bodies of 20 people who had been kidnapped and executed.

Although the number of car bombings was unusually high, the number of people who died was not. Violence -- both the sectarian kind between Sunni Arabs and Shiites, and insurgent attacks on U.S. and Iraqi government forces -- has continued unabated since parliament met on Saturday to choose a new prime minister to lead Iraq for the next four years.

...

In one such incident on Monday, five police officers and 10 other Iraqis died in a car bombing outside a restaurant in the Bab al-Muadham neighborhood of central Baghdad, according to police Col. Salam Muhsin. The police officers were having breakfast, Muhsin said.
