LONDON - Britain’s Prince Harry, an army officer and third in line to the throne, may be shielded from the frontline if his unit is sent to war, the Ministry of Defense said on Monday.

Harry’s deployment or continuing presence in a conflict zone might be brought into question if the prince, who graduated as an army officer this month, were to become a specific target, the ministry said.

There is a tradition of British royals serving in the armed forces. Harry’s uncle, the Duke of York, flew a helicopter in the Falkland’s War in 1982 and his great-grandfather King George VI saw action in World War I.

Harry, 21, who is in the infantry and is training to command 11 men and four light tanks in an armed reconnaissance unit, has insisted he wants a frontline role. However, a ministry spokeswoman said his role would have to be carefully monitored.

LONDON - Prince Harry would be involved in "the fullest range of deployments" if his unit is sent to Iraq, but he might be kept out of situations where his presence would jeopardize his comrades, the Ministry of Defense said Monday.

Harry, the 21-year-old second son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, recently completed his training at Sandhurst military academy and is a second lieutenant in the Household Cavalry.

The Mail on Sunday newspaper, quoting unidentified sources, reported that Harry had threatened to resign from the army if he is held out of combat roles.

It's unclear, however, when the question might arise.

11. His Grandfather, Prince Phillip, served in the British Navy during WWII.

The Queen served in the miltary in some sort of womens reserve corps as a truck mechanic during WWII. Prince Wiliam has already begun his military training at Sandhurst. Prince Charles was also in the armed forces. (Navy?)

12. I think it's wise on the military's behalf

HE may want to be 'just like his buddies' and feel compelled to be on the front lines. But he's a big target with screaming Spencer red hair and his daddy's ears. His fellow soldiers shouldn't be put in danger just because of his "position" in the monarchy and the public.

But I do have to feel a sense of pride that he's willing to risk his life. His mother was a heroine to me growning up and I remember watching her leave the hospital with him after his birth. It's good to see him survive her death, all the scandals, being a young teen and become such a good and brave man.

20. This is true. Say what you will about them, but the royals do rise to

the occasion and put their money where their mouths are. And don't forget Elizabeth the Queen Mother and why she was so beloved til the very end. She refused to leave London during the Nazi blitzkriegs, or to send her young daughters out. She said something to the effect of - "the children go when I go. And I go when the King goes." And the King wasn't leaving his people. (Everybody remember what bush did after 9/11? Fly his pansy-ass all over the Sunbelt for hours and hours, looking for a place to hide, leaving TV anchors to question aloud - "WHERE is the president?") Furthermore, the quote on Prince Charles's coat of arms, translated, is "I Serve."

At least they recognize that they serve their subjects, and that their titles and privileges leave them with serious obligations to their people. That's something you will NEVER see the imperial bush klan demonstrate. Bet on it.
