Hundreds of Greeks protest against planned visit by Rice

Hundreds of Greek leftists and peace activists held an anti-American march in central Athens on Monday, protesting a scheduled brief visit to Greece by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday.

The main roads, Vassilissis Sofias Avenue in front of the American Embassy in Greece and Amalias Avenue in front of the Sintagma Square and the Parliament building, were blocked by police from 6 p.m. (1400GMT) to prevent several planned demonstrations and marches by leftists and peace activists.

However, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) managed to put up a big poster reading "Rice Go Home" from the Magara Concert Hall, next to the American Embassy. Meanwhile, about 300 protesters marched towards the embassy shouting anti-American slogans, but were blocked by anti-riot police from approaching the embassy compound. <snip>

In a separate announcement, the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (SYN) condemned U.S. threat of the use of force on the Iran's nuclear issue, calling Rice a persona non grata.

The Greek Social Forum announced that it had called a demonstration in Athens and a march to the U.S. embassy on Tuesday morning. <snip>

Athens police have fired teargas during a clash with anti-war demonstrators protesting against a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Some protesters hurled petrol bombs, sticks and stones in return.

Ms Rice is meeting Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis as part of a five-day trip to Europe that also includes Turkey and Bulgaria.

Thousands of protesters are said to have gathered in Athens. Some 5,000 riot police have been deployed.

Police in Athens have fired teargas during a clash with anti-war demonstrators protesting against a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Dr Rice is meeting the Greek Prime Minister as part of a five-day trip to Europe that also includes Turkey and Bulgaria.

Five thousand police were deployed against hundreds of protesters, some of whom hurled petrol bombs, sticks and stones.

The police responded with tear gas.

The protesters were trying to reach the parliamentary buildings where Dr Rice met Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis.
