Mexico, Russia cooperate in satellite project
Mexican and Russian scientists are cooperating in a satellite project intended to detect seismic movements, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) said on Monday in a statement.
Juan Ramon de la Fuente, head of the UNAM space science department, said the 10-kg satellite, to be launched into space at the end of 2007, would allow scientists to predict seismic events, such as earth- and sea-quakes, by observing small electrical and electromagnetic changes created by deep earth movements.
The project, described by de la Fuente as one of his department's most ambitious ones, was launched under an agreement signed between UNAM and Russia's Moscow Aviation Institute in January 2005, de la Fuente said.
