Senator blocks promotion for ex-Cole skipper (Repub, of course)

A 1977 Carson High School graduate who commanded the destroyer USS Cole in 2000 when it was bombed in the Persian Gulf by al Qaeda is again seeking a promotion the Navy has recommended but has been blocked by a U.S. senator.

Kirk S. Lippold said Monday all he wants is an "up-or-down vote like every other presidential nominee deserves."

Lippold was captain of the 505-foot ship that was refueling Oct. 12 when a boat his crew thought was a garbage tug pulled alongside in Aden, Yemen. Al Qaeda bombers aboard the boat detonated explosives that ripped a hole 40 feet high by 40 feet wide in the Cole, killing 17 U.S. sailors, wounding 39 others and damaging it so severely it almost sank.

Lippold was not punished by the Department of Defense after an investigation. Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen said in 2001 that blame extended throughout the Pentagon and Navy leadership.

Warner wants to talk about innocent people dying? What is going on in Iraq? 2000+ soldiers have lost their lives over nothing and he has the balls to talk about innocent people dying. Can you say hypocrite?
