Nepalis celebrate protest victory (BBC)
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 10:43 AM by Canuckistanian
Thousands of Nepalis have been holding a victory rally in the capital Kathmandu after the king gave in to their demands to reinstate parliament.

The seven-party opposition alliance said it had called off its weeks of demonstrations and a nationwide strike.

"Gyanendra, thief, leave the country," shouted some protesters who had gathered near the royal palace, saying they would not stop demonstrating until the king was stripped of his powers.

4. Mind you, they didn't have to face quite the same obstacles
It was admirable what they did and several did lose their lives, but to make an analogy to what's going on in America is misleading.

The Nepalis did not have to face the juggernauts of an all-powerful military/police state, with it's even more powerful media and corporate weight.

Still, someone or some group has got to lead the charge. Right now, there's a massive groundswell of oppostion in America with nowhere to focus and no great leaders charging forward with the banners.

I have hope.

5. I think the Nepalese perhaps faced more obstacles.
And if not more, precisely, quite different obstacles.

But I have to say that an autocratic king who is believed to be descended directly from the gods who takes control of the military, policy, media and corporations is quite an obstacle.

Though I do agree that an attempt to draw direct similarities is misleading. But we should be careful not to diminish what the Nepalese are and were facing.

6. No, I didn't mean to diminish it at all
This is a great victory. But the struggle continues for them. The Marxists still don't like this situation and will continue their attacks.
