ABC News under fire for taped beating
ABC News under fire for taped beating

LAKE PLACID, N.Y., April 25 (UPI) -- New York state and Franklin County authorities want to know why ABC did not report the beating of a teenager that was taped and aired on "Primetime."

"Clearly a crime was committed right there on TV," Franklin County District Attorney Derek Champagne told the New York Post. "I'm obviously outraged that the first time I see what would appear to clearly be child abuse ... in our own backyard is on a national news program."

The video of the 15-year-old girl being beaten by her father was broadcast Friday during a Diane Sawyer feature about step-families.

The beating was captured on cameras installed by ABC News in rural Vermontville, N.Y.

1. Good....
IF ABC didn't report it, than I'm glad they are catching the heat from it. That friday night, when they showed the show, after the show, I wrote ABC about it, and made mention of "did they report to the authorities"...

I dont' know how accurate, or credible that link is, but it looks like ABC didn't report the abuse to anyone. If you "dont'" see the abuse in that ABC show, than man, you need some glasses...

I do believe I have a couple of posts concerning this in my journal...

2. Ratings, ratings, ratings!
Dirty Laundry Lyrics
by Don Henley

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don’t have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
It’s interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You don’t really need to find out what’s going on
You don’t really want to know just how far it’s gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down

Kick ’em when they’re up
Kick ’em when they’re down
Kick ’em when they’re stiff
Kick ’em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody’s pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When it’s said and done we haven’t told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!

3. Yeah, its a "Mad World"...
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces

Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
no expression
No expression

Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
no tomorrow
No tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which i´m dying
Are the best i´ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
´cause I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It´s a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday
Happy birthday

Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen
Sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me
No one knew me

Now the teacher tells me what´s my lesson
Look right through me
Look right through me

And I find it kind of funny...

6. To call that woman a beast...
...is an insult to beasts.

I don't know what that woman was--but she deserves to be in prison for a long time.

She seems unreachable. Incredibly ignorant and selfish. The way that she was willing to
use Kyle as a receptacle for her rage--was quite sickening. Kyle is an object to that woman, and she should have her parenting card torn up and burned.

...but I know what you mean, Maddy. It was hard to watch, wasn't it?

5. I really hope that this abuse victim gets help...
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 10:19 PM by TwoSparkles
Did anyone else see Prime Time last Friday? I didn't see the show, but I pulled a few clips from the ABC Web site.

The disgusting physical and emotional abuse that this 15-year old girl endured---was absolutely heartbreaking. Her mother is an abusive, mentally-ill, selfish sloth. Her father is a violent piece of trash who blamed this child for causing this mother to walk out. The mother stormed out, after hitting the child and screaming, "You want to hit me!!! Go ahead!".

This family is sick. Very, very sick.

I am happy that something is being done, but the abused child's comments are also very sad--but typical of many abuse victims. She's backtracking--saying that this isn't typical of her father to do this to her. BULLSHIT!! We're supposed to believe that this man--who knew ABC cameras were on him--rarely does this to his daughter.

Both parents were very immature people with personality disorders. They knew cameras were on them, and I'll bet what we witnessed some of their best behavior--and it was sick!

When the daughter was innocently looking at some CDs with her father, this mother came at the daughter, and the daughter began screaming. The mother raised her hand over her head, and the girl automatically went into duck-and-cover mode--with her hands over her head, in total fear.

Sure...this is "not typical."

I really hope that someone steps in to remove ALL of the children from this home. These people don't deserve to be parents. The daughter's backpedaling only demonstrates that she is a typical abuser--rationalizing and explaining away the behavior of the abuser--because she's been taught that she's always wrong, they are always right--and her humanity and feelings mean zilch.

Let's just hope that CPS sees the tape and presses charges.

I'm so sick of child abuse. I'm so sick of nothing being done about it.

Shame on you, ABC!!!! It's been months since this story aired--and they did NOTHING to help this poor girl or the other three children who remain in that house. DAMN!

13. If it went unreported by ABC for months, then those in charge at ABC for
that delay should be tried, convicted and imprisoned along with the parents of that girl.

7.  FYI-This happened 3 years ago.
The daughter (now 18) was on GMA today with her mom and authorities who talked about the case. Nothing was done as the girl was not in the home anymore when the state saw the tape. They did not act like it was a big deal. (I rarely watch TV at night and did not watch the tape whenever it was on) They did not show it this morning as the girl requested that it not be shown, only talked about. She said that it had never happened before or after that incident, and that she knew her father loved her very much.

They (Diane Sawyer, the family, and authorities) talked about why it had not been reported by ABC. Apparently, the show overwhelmingly saw good things going on in the family as they had filmed for several weeks. This morning, they didn't actually explain what the "incident" was.

10. Didn't they say the father was sent to Iraq not long after the taping?
I remember thinking, wow, they have to be taking anyone in the military. This guy seemed, oh, strange.

My mother took a belt to me worse than that two times in my life. The first time I was 9 years old. But, she had to work and I was running the streets after dark (that was the big no-no) of a bad city while she was working. She had to get the point across to me that it was not safe. The second time was for the same offense. I've never thought for a second that my Mom, who I lost 11 years ago, was an abusive mother. She was strict as hell! If she said NO to something, you did not ask again. But, she didn't have to beat me to do that. She was just one tough cookie. I miss her strength terribly. I have to admit though, if I had children I could never, ever beat them with a belt. I couldn't hit them at all.

11. The MSM must get the message...

...we don't want our news sanitized! We're grown adults -- we can take it; even if your owners/sponsors can't.

The family that did the beating was highly dysfunctional. That poor girl...

14. Was it just another cruel step mother story?
The woman sounds crazy but the father was the one who beat her. I'm a stepmother and I get tired of all the cruel stepmother stories. Not all of us are monsters. The media and society are so ingrained with the cruel stepmother image that even a good stepmother is fighting a losing battle.
