Daniel Wultz, a 16-year-old American tourist who was critically wounded in last week's suicide bombing in Tel Aviv, awoke Tuesday for the first time since the explosion.
Daniel, from Florida, was sitting with his Israeli-born father, Yekutiel (Tuly), eating a felafel lunch in Tel Aviv during their Passover vacation when the bomb that killed nine people on April 17 exploded. His father escaped with a minor leg injury, but Daniel fell into a coma.
Daniel regained consciousness Tuesday, said Yale Tsubary, spokeswoman for Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital, where Daniel is being treated. He is not yet able to speak, she said, but he can communicate with his eyes. Although the teenager's condition is still listed as critical, Tsubary said he is likely to recover.
Still in Ichilov Hospital, doctors have removed Daniel's spleen and a kidney, as well as amputated part of his leg.
