NBC/WSJ Poll: America Continues to Sour on Bush, Congress (Bush at 36%)
Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 06:13 PM by VolcanoJen
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12499923/

WASHINGTON - As gasoline prices have spiked above $3 a gallon throughout the country, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that the public’s view of President Bush’s job, the economy and the nation’s direction have continued to decline. But with the midterm elections just six months away, the biggest drop in the survey — 11 points in one month — is in the approval rating of Congress, which is locked in a bitter debate over what do about these gas prices, immigration, Iraq and a host of other issues.

"You have never seen such a sour mood in the country,” says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican Bill McInturff. “It is sour, sour, sour.”

<snip>

According to the poll, Bush’s approval rating fell by one point from last month to 36 percent, his lowest mark in the survey. But the troubling news for Bush doesn’t stop there: Hart explains that Bush has now spent nine consecutive months at 40 percent or below in the poll, a feat exceeded only by Richard Nixon (13 months) and Harry Truman (26 months).

<snip>

Yet Bush’s approval isn’t the only measure that has declined. In the poll — which was taken April 21-24 of 1,005 adults, and which has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points — just 24 percent believe the nation is headed in the right direction, a drop of two points since last month and seven points since January. What’s more, only 17 percent think the nation’s economy will improve in the next 12 months, a decline of seven points since March.

1. 36%?????
That's a four point bump from the 32% he's had for the last week.

I know it's a different poll, but...

2. The NBC/WSJ has consistently had him at higher approval...
... than other polls. Still, the article notes that 36% reflects a one-point drop from last month, and is his lowest rating in the poll to date.

8. No it isn't
32% was CNN, this is a NBC/WSJ poll. Networks tend to act like only their polls exist, and they ignore the polls done by other networks.

For a corporate poll like NBC/WSJ to rate in at 36% is pretty encouraging. Let's not complain.

11. I don't buy it.
I think it's much lower than they let on. I believe Bush's numbers are actually in the 'teens, like 18%, maybe 19%. That's why they're so desperate in Washington. They know the real story.

5. Here's an interesting tidbit about Dem chances in November
Edited on Wed Apr-26-06 06:19 PM by VolcanoJen
From the article:

How will that anger play out in November’s midterm elections? Forty-five percent of registered voters say they prefer Democrats controlling Congress, compared with 39 percent who say they want Republicans in charge. That six-point Democratic advantage, however, is smaller than the 13-point advantage Democrats held in March or the nine-point advantage they had in January.

Yet while McInturff says voters “are not happy with either party,” he cautions against reading too much into that narrower margin, pointing out that all other polls he has seen show Democrats with a sizable lead.

McInturff is a Republican pollster. ;-)

12. Republicans Sag in New Poll (WSJ/NBC News Poll - Bush at 36%)
Bush and Congress
Get Perilously Low Marks
As Gas Prices Rise
By JOHN HARWOOD
April 27, 2006; Page A4

Rising gas prices have intensified discontent with Washington and handed Congress a frightening midterm election backdrop: a deeply pessimistic electorate, despite a robust economy.

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll underscores a striking gap between Americans' mood and the nation's economic performance. Fully 77% call themselves uneasy about the state of the economy rather than confident, even as data showed new-home sales and factory orders remain strong. Economists expect a similar message tomorrow when the government reports on first-quarter growth.

Public unease partly reflects fallout from the prolonged and unpopular Iraq war. But it also shows the impact of pump prices topping $3 a gallon in many places, passing Iraq to become the nation's highest-priority issue. The upshot: Two-thirds of Americans say the nation is "off on the wrong track," President Bush's approval rating has fallen to 36% and Congress fares even worse at 22% approval.

"There's almost nothing that the public is satisfied with," says Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducts the Journal/NBC poll with Republican counterpart Bill McInturff. "What they're telling you is, they want change on every front."

17. Real Clear Politics has done some odd things lately. For example:
They NEVER added the Harris poll from earlier this month to Bush approval but DID add it to the direction of the country numbers.

THE HARRIS POLL

Bush's Approval Remains Low,
Pessimism Grows, Poll Shows

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE
April 19, 2006

President Bush's job-approval rating slipped for the third consecutive month and remains near the lowest mark of his presidency, according to a new Harris Interactive poll.

Thirty-five percent of 1,008 U.S. adults surveyed in the telephone poll think Mr. Bush is doing an "excellent or pretty good" job as president, down from 36% in March and significantly lower than 43% in January. This compares with 63% of Americans who said Mr. Bush is doing an "only fair or poor" job, down from 64% in March.

They consistently put Rasmussen in there to bring up the average when even Charlie Cook talked about the flawed methodology of Rasmussen and how he personally NEVER includes Rasmussen into his analysis.

It'll be interesting to see if they ever add this new one to the mix.
