I am no US poodle: Musharraf

I am no US poodle: Musharraf

London: Facing a surge of anti-American sentiment and admitting that his popularity in Pakistan was on the wane, a defiant President Pervez Musharraf told The Guardian in an interview that he was "not a poodle" of President George Bush.

Insisting that he was his own man, Musharraf told the paper that his fight against the spread of terrorism in his country was not being done for the benefit of the United States or Britain, but for Pakistan.

"I'm doing it for Pakistan. It's not a question of being a poodle. I'm nobody's poodle. I have enough strength of my own to lead. Pragmatism is required in international relations," the paper quoted Musharraf as saying.

He also rejected suggestions that he was running a military dictatorship.

"It is ironic that I'm sitting in uniform talking of democracy. But to bring democracy into Pakistan I thought I needed it," he said.

Musharraf insisted that there was no question of Pakistan submitting to American scrutiny and said claims that his government acted at Washington's bidding was nonsense. "There is no need of any checks - that is the reality," he said.

1. Looks like another 'friends' Bush is having trouble with.
Best we did not let Bush look into any one eyes any more. He does not seem to be reading souls through the eyes right any more.

2. And just like Bush, "there's no need for scrutiny".....
he'd never do anything without the best interest of Pakistan in mind. :eyes: If these two are so damned honest then they should WELCOME oversight into their actions but..........they don't. They squash any attempt to see what's behind their curtain of secrecy.

8. Blair is Bush's poodle, Musharraf is Bush's rat.
Musharraf took power in a military coup after he was fired as Defense Minister. Now Musharraf claims he is not a military dictator. Let's hear him say that when his dead body is dragged through the streets of Islamabad.

11. I wonder how large Musharraf 's security contingent is?
More than several thousand? How many are actually loyal to him? How long until one of em blows Musharraf's brains out, Sadat style?

That man is living his life not knowing from one day to the next what will happen to him. Such is a life of a military dictator.

14. Welcome to DU OHG

love your nic. i've been noticing so many new members in DU lately. looks like what the polls say about the monkey is correct. 68% of americans are indeed fed up with the monkey's antics.

i dont know the answer to you question about Musharraf's security contingent, but this i gotta say - musharraf's problem is that civil society, i.e. middle class pakistanis, is the biggest strength the bloke has. the english media considers musharraf as the best option in very bad times. so they are, and this i'm basing on the editorials in pakistani (english, mind) newspapers over a period of time, generally tolerant and supportive of him. yet unfortunately for musharraf, civil society in pakistan (like civil society elsewhere) does not have the rowdiness and committment to violence that is required to combat the extremists and their kooky ways.

civil society waits for critical mass, even when the barbarians have stormed the gates and reached all the way to the toilets.

20. Tyrants gravitate towards one another
which explains why Bush and Musharraf are such great pals.

The irony is that suppressing the moderates in Pakistan, Musharraf has strengthened the hands of the Islamic radicals. Not unlike what Bush has done in Iraq!

Award for Idiot of the Week. Pervez Musharraf knows he's hanging on by a thread. He's only there because of US backing.

The Irony meter goes on overload: It is ironic tht I'm sitting in uniform talking of democracy". beep-beep-beep
