Congress Members Arrested at Sudan Protest
Congress Members Arrested at Sudan Protest
By ANDREW MIGA, Associated Press Writer
Friday, April 28, 2006

(04-28) 08:49 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Five Congress members were willingly arrested and led away from the Sudanese Embassy in plastic handcuffs Friday in protest of the Sudanese government's role in atrocities in the Darfur region.

"The slaughter of the people of Darfur must end," Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., a Holocaust survivor who founded the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, said from the embassy steps before his arrest.

Four other Democratic Congress members — James McGovern and John Olver of Massachusetts, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and Jim Moran of Virginia — were among 11 protesters arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor subject to a fine.

"We must hold the Sudanese government accountable for the attacks they have supported on their own citizens in Darfur," Olver said.

1. Dufar is so neglected by the US/UN--I am glad they are putting a face
on it--genocide was mostly ignored.

7. Dufar is neglected by most of the world. This is why all fences
should be torn down and one nation on the face of this earth. I think there is still time. Maybe?

4. Cowards!
Why didn't they do that in front of the White House? I'll tell you why. Darfur is an easy way to score some political points. Dealing with, and talking about immigration, Iraq war, (a war for which they voted for), economy, or foreign policy is too dangerous, dangerous for their careers that is.

Cowards, all of em.

5. What a load.
If that's the only reason there'd be as many congresscritters there as at steroids in baseball hearings.

Darfur's been an ongoing disgrace, and it's good that at least some DC pols are waking up to it.

8. Your suggestion that these people all voted for the war, and have
not discussed the issues you note, highlights your ignorance.

19. I'm confused. What did they do that was against the law?
What was disorderly about their conduct and how was their assembly unlawful?

What a crock of poop. I've two minds about this show biz demo. I don't trust Lantos, he is very conservative. This issue deserves much more attention and it will take some showbiz to raise it's profile above that of "Desperate Housewives", Neverland and lacrosse...

21. My rep has a soul and I take solace in that...
I wrote to tell him how impressed I was...

Get this:

His website has a link to get heating fuel assistance.
There is no link to contribute to his campaign.

How's that for a politician? Asks for nothing and offers help?
