1. What?
Turned himself in?

What?

Sounds either too good to be true or a publicity stunt.

Settlement Agreement Ends State Investigation of Rush Limbaugh

PALM BEACH, Fla., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to media and other inquiries, Roy Black, Rush Limbaugh's attorney, released the following statement today concerning a settlement agreement with the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office to end the investigation of Mr. Limbaugh:

"I am pleased to announce that the State Attorney's Office and Mr. Limbaugh have reached an agreement whereby a single count charge of doctor shopping filed today by the State Attorney will be dismissed in 18 months. As a primary condition of the dismissal, Mr. Limbaugh must continue to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past two and one half years. This is the same doctor under whose care Mr. Limbaugh has remained free of his addiction without relapse.

"Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping, and we continue to hold this position. Accordingly, we filed today with the Court a plea of 'Not Guilty' to the charge filed by the State.

"As part of this agreement, Mr. Limbaugh also has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation. The agreement also provides that he must refrain from violating the law during this 18 months, must pay $30 per month for the cost of "supervision" and comply with other similar provisions of the agreement.

So Rush gets away with a hand-slap, as expected. But in the process, he just made a precarious agreement: Rush made a promise to not violate the law at all for eighteen months.

So why don't we use all the powers at the disposal of our no longer free nor private society to put a pair of eyes on Rush at all times, making sure he doesn't do anything like support his drug habit, make illicit campaign contributions, or acquire and smoke Havana cigars. He may be tempted to cash in on the shady real estate development scams and local government manipulations which are flourishing in Palm Beach county right now. He may aid and abet criminal elements within our very government through his position as a public figure.

Rush is asking for the public's help in keeping him straight. So let's help him be the person he do desperately wishes to be... or throw his lilly white double-buttholed arse in the hoosegow if he fails.

230. It was in the FWB Daily News at the time. I'll try to look it up.
Can't find the Daily News, but I did find this:

31 May 2004 In an interview with Time magazine, Rush Limbaugh declares himself a longtime fan of the ACLU after they filed an amicus brief on his behalf in his prescription drug case: "In a situation like this, I think it's safe to say I welcome its support, and I don't find it hypocritical at all, because I am not anti-ACLU. If the ACLU wants to go after, say, nativity scenes or this sort of thing, I may take issue, but there are other areas where I've supported things it has done."

69. He probably entered a "not guilty" plea....
waived his right to a jury trial on the condition that the judge doesn't charge him with the crime as long as he stays clean. If he doesn't stay clean, the charge is filed, he is found guilty and he is punished.

Sucks. You or I wouldn't get to do that. Money talks. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if before Dubya leaves office he doesn't pardon old Limpballs.

34. Rush Limbaugh arrested on prescription fraud charges (Sun-Sentinel)
WEST PALM BEACH -- Rush Limbaugh was arrested Friday on prescription drug charges, law enforcement officials said.

Limbaugh turned himself in to authorities on a warrant issued by the State Attorney's Office, said Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office.

The conservative radio commentator came into the jail at about 4 p.m. with his attorney Roy Black and bonded out an hour later on a $3,000 bail, Barbera said.

The warrant was for fraud to conceal information to obtain prescription, Barbera said.

Hell, in 1983, when I was harrased by the police in a small Indiana town for under-age drinking, they set a $10,000 bail (of course, this never officially happened, as all records of this incident were expunged and returned to me). :hide:

Settlement Agreement Ends State Investigation of Rush Limbaugh
Friday April 28, 5:57 pm ET

"Mr. Limbaugh had intended to remain in treatment. Thus, we believe the outcome for him personally will be much as if he had fought the charge and won."

The actions taken today are as follows:

-- The State Attorney has filed a single charge of doctor shopping with
the Court. The charge is being held in abeyance under the terms of an
agreement between the State and Mr. Limbaugh.

-- Mr. Limbaugh has filed a plea of "Not Guilty" with the Court.

The formal agreement between Mr. Limbaugh and the State Attorney will be filed with the Court on Monday. The terms of the agreement are substantively as follows:

-- Mr. Limbaugh will continue in treatment with the doctor he has seen for
the past two and one half years.

-- After Mr. Limbaugh completes an additional 18 months of treatment, the
State Attorney has agreed to drop the charge.

-- Mr. Limbaugh has agreed to make a $30,000 payment to the State of
Florida to defray the public cost of the investigation.

It's a cush deal, shows how money can buy you freedom.

Now if this was some poor fellow on the streets, he would do the time and not get the cush deal.

159. That's the 1st thing I thought....
He went in...
pleads guilty...
posted a bond...

Then skipping the part we commoners call a trial...

18 months of drug testing at $30 a month. (By his own physician?)
$30,000 "fine"

'Round here we call that "probation and expungment", typical in first offenses.
But where the hell is rule of law?
Why was no judge involved? They went from enforcement directly to probation dept, bypassing the judicial bench entirely.

Was there the chance a Democrat judge would hear the case?
This isn't right

162. Bond was $3000
Cost of the investigation is to be paid by Limbaugh at $30,000.
They can't call it a fine....because they aren't using a judge. He wasn't convicted of anything.
Plus monthly drug testing, apparently by his own doctor(?), at $30 a month.

They went from sheriff to the probation department, skipping the judge and jury entirely, thanx to a friendly district atty.
There may be a shortage of Republican judges in FL.

77. Something is fishy. How can he be arrested, pleads innocent, & get plea
bargain. In other words he committed a felony, gets a slap on the writs, & it doesn't get on his record because he pleads not-guilty?!? Sounds like the 'no wrong doing' crap the corporations are always pulling. Oh, millions of dollars are pilfered by our exec. but not one did anything wrong. Or
we just polluted a river, made a deal with the gov't, & nothing wrong happened.

Sounds like complete story isn't in yet or this is the ultimate whitewash.

So when it comes to Rush or Jeb Crows daughter - GOP is soft on crime, but for dems & minorities it's lock em up forever. Except - rich dems get away with stuff too - i.e Kennedy.

Note the timing of the press release - Friday evening - is that by accident?

wherein the defendant agrees to comply with a bunch of set tasks (treatment program, no substance abuse, a fine, community service, etc.) within a certain period of time, during which the state keeps the case on hold. If the defendant complies, the charges are dropped. It's really not that unusual.

I still hate Rush with every fiber of my being.

In fact I think hate gets a bad rap. Hate can be a very positive and constructive emotion.

When Limbaugh apologizes for all of the years of hate and disrespect that he showed to Bill and Hillary Clinton and pledges his full support for the Clinton health care plan, then I may reconsider my position.

Otherwise, I will let a wave of hate wash over me, and bathe in it.

ok. i can live with that.

anger and hate are two powerful emotions with lots of drive in them.

so you will have to pardon me while i revel in my primitive, base emotions.

pissing on the constitution and using it as toilet paper is not something that warrants a "turning the other cheek" response. these people have destroyed this country. this is not a hate the sin, love the sinner scenario.

there is nothing wishy washy about me (except maybe my walk, and i am trying to butch that up). :-)

in the meanwhile, forget angry. color me LIVID!

Just listen to all the pleasant, helpful, non-divisive, never accusatory, never character-assassinating, never untruthful, never slanderous, never, ever rumor-mongering comments Rush has showered upon his fellow Americans these past 20 years or so.

Guy is like a ROCK...a SYMBOL...a LIVING MONUMENT! of American civility and upstanding honesty and...and...

Why the hate? Limbaugh isn't just a rich guy who committed a crime --- he makes his living by spewing hateful lies for three hours a day, Monday through Friday.

Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 09:00 PM by tabasco
Limbaugh calls me a traitor because I am a liberal. I also happen to be an Army Ranger.

Limbaugh is a hatemonger. He preaches hate to gullible people who then hate whoever Limbaugh tells them to hate.

Limbaugh is an enemy of this Nation. Limbaugh is a typical coward freeper. He loves war as long as he isn't in it.

I hate Limbaugh and all the stupid fuckers that believe his lies. Karma is not done with Limbaugh yet.

101. Hell, there's a middle-aged white guy doing 25 years now for LEGIT scrips.
ABC news, I think, did a story on him a couple of months ago. He has a legitimate and serious chronic pain problem (back injury), and requires a ton of low-dose oxycontin. He has legitimate scrips for them. An overzealous federal investigator arrested him for prescription fraud, and he's now in prison where, ironically, he finally gets all the pain meds he needs.

202. I agree, the drug war is a travesty and a cruel waste of money and life.
But Rush has advocated- forcefully and repeatedly- in favor of the drug war, as well as a "lock 'em up" approach to so-called "druggies".

I'm sure he was thinking of deadheads in a VW bus with a pot seed on the floot when he said those things, but now the shoe is on the other foot. Tough. If these draconian laws should be enforced on anyone, it should be on the people who think they're such a great fuckin' idea. Maybe they'll wise up and understand that not only is it none of the government's business from a philosophical standpoint what consenting adults do (so long as they're not harming or endangering anyone else) with their own bodies and bloodstreams, but also that addiction should be approached as a public health matter, and not a law enforcement one.

On CNN they quoted Limpball's lawyer as saying that they entered a plea of NOT GUILTY.

Don't you have to go to trial if you plead NOT GUILTY?

his following in any way. It didn't the last time he went into rehab. I'm not in the habit of listening to the pompous dough boy but I got an earful in my car one day after my X had borrowed it and changed the radio station. Dough boy was talking shit and pointing his finger at some "real" criminal druggies in his usual know-it-all, better-than-thou voice. His followers were still calling in - stupid as ever. I don't expect this time will be any different. (Unfortunately)

I could have sworn on my one eyed uncles grave that CNN first reported the 'arrest' of Rusty Limpballs. It seems they changed the headline to Limbaugh 'cuts a deal' with prosecutors.

It's more like 'Limpballs cuts some hillbilly heroin with a shick razor to snort'type of headline.

Was CNN bullied by Glen Beck or LimpBalls lawyer?

184. It's not a NEW charge, except technically...
It's part of a deal related to the same ongoing charges that have been going on for three years. I'm not sure how this works, but he apparently agreed to be booked and charged (I didn't know people got to decide such things) on one charge, for a lenient penalty.

186. Limbaugh Reaches Settlement in Drug Case (charges to be dropped)
Edited on Fri Apr-28-06 11:26 PM by Tab
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Rush Limbaugh and prosecutors in the long-running painkiller fraud case against him have reached a deal calling for the only charge against the conservative commentator to be dropped if he continues treatment, his attorney said Friday.

Limbaugh was booked on a single charge that was filed Friday, said Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Jail. He left about an hour later, after Limbaugh was photographed and fingerprinted and he posted $3,000 bail, Barbera said.

The radio giant's agreement to enter a diversionary program ends a three-year state investigation that began after Limbaugh publicly acknowledged being addicted to pain medication and entered a rehabilitation program.
...
Limbaugh pleaded not guilty Friday to a charge of fraud to conceal information to obtain prescriptions. Though he steadfastly denies doctor shopping, the charge will be dismissed in 18 months if Limbaugh complies with court guidelines, his lawyer Roy Black said.

"Mr. Limbaugh and I have maintained from the start that there was no doctor shopping, and we continue to hold this position," Black said in an e-mailed statement.

Limbaugh spokesman Tony Knight said the commentator signed the agreement Thursday, and that it called for him to enter the not guilty plea. "It's not in the system moving toward trial. It was all a formality. It's a concluded deal," Knight said.
...
As a primary condition of the dismissal, Limbaugh must continue to seek treatment from the doctor he has seen for the past 2 1/2 years, Black said. Among other provisions, he also has agreed to pay the state $30,000 to defray its investigative costs, Black said.

After 18 months, "He will not have any criminal record," Black said.
...
Limbaugh "feels that a great burden has been lifted from his shoulders," Black said. "What he told me is that this is the first day of the rest of his life."

192. Imagine if he was poor and black. Heck! Imagine if he were just any of us
This is DISGUSTING!!!

Truly revolting how every fucking day we get more exampels that there really are TWO systems of justice in America: the sweet deals for the rich, and throwing the book at everyone else.

Historians keep saying the USA is turning into a SouthAmerican-style banana republic, faster and faster.

Are we Mexico already?

Are we?

209. US radio pundit on drugs charge
Even the Beeb can't resist!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4957154.stm

US radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been charged with fraudulently obtaining prescription drugs.

The move comes after an investigation into the commentator that began over two years ago.

Mr Limbaugh, 55, was charged with illegally obtaining prescriptions, or "doctor shopping", after presenting himself at the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

He was later released on $3,000 (£1,643) bail, according to his lawyer, Roy Black.

Having a drug addict as your movement's brains is not a good idea. But since they do have a drug addict acting as their brains, they have not figured this out yet.

Pathetic.

227. Privileged = Private Law

From its Latin origin, a privilege is a "private law," a law with someone's name on it, a law that permits someone to do what others may not do.

www.wealthandwant.com/themes/Privileges.html

We throw the word around casually but, it literally means the rich have a different law system than than the rest. It's just that simple.

OF COURSE, he got off easy - he's 'privileged'.

228. Limbaugh=Jeff Christie
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 02:49 PM by happydreams
This has been a topic here at DU. Rush changed his name to Jeff Christie back in the early 70's. It is said that he was a nabbed in a homosexual act on a city street in PA. Anybody here anything else about this?

Is Limbaugh's virulent homophobia really a denial of his own gayness?

229. Sure, He's Gay
The worst men in history are the ones denying their their homosexuality.

People wanna homosexuality a menace but, the REAL MENACE is homosexuals who are in denial.

From Napolean to Bush to Rush. Denial of it seems to manifest into aggression. And, more often than not, it's against gays - when they KNOW they really are interested in men.

Denying their true feelings sublimates into some extremely negative shit.

Ask Hoover.

The world would've been better off of he just went out and met a nice guy and didn't have to hide it.

But, I don't mean to disparage gays by adding him to the pool. No, it's a different group that has no name.

I call it 'nascent gay'. Not truly gay, if they could ADMIT IT, they'd be gay.

Instead, they turn into some malefic distortion of what they really are because they can't admit it.

This is different than being in the closet - knowing you're gay but, not feeling safe to let people know. THESE MEN haven't even been able to make that connection in their minds and they lash out instead of trying to explore it. But, it doesn't go away so, they keep pretty busy acting out - throughout their whole lives.

I don't think there's anything more dangerous than a latently gay man who can't admit it. If he gets into a position of power, he'll shit all over everything, trying to deal with his hidden needs that he can't express.

Repressing sexuality is a dangerous thing. We get perverts and tyrants and fascists and monsters.

In the end, if Hoover could've admitted he liked men and lived that way, there would've been alot less energy spent on making everybody else miserable.

I guess a man that wants men but can't have them IS miserable - and, misery loves company...
