The witnesses' mother apparently slept through the attack and called 911 hours later after she discovered the naked victim near death in her backyard, Harris County sheriff's detectives said.

Horrifying details have continued to emerge about last weekend's attack, which left a 17-year-old party guest in critical condition and prompted the arrests of two others, one sporting swastika tattoos.

David Henry Tuck, 18, and Keith Robert Turner, 17, remain in administrative lockdown at Harris County Jail, where they are being held without bond. Both are charged with aggravated sexual assault.

Prosecutors said Friday they won't seek hate crimes charges against two white teens accused of beating a 17-year-old Hispanic boy. Civil rights groups claimed there was no other reason for the attack.

Authorities said the suspects acknowledged they beat the boy but say it was because he kissed a 12-year-old girl. The teens claimed they were offended at the age difference between the victim and the girl, who also is Hispanic.

Detective Michael Weinel of the Harris County Sheriff's Department also said the youths were drinking, smoking marijuana and taking anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

"I don't know that the very beginning of the attack was racial," said prosecutor Mike Trent, "but there's no question that they were venting quite a bit of hatred in their hearts."

That is one of the reasons she and I are no longer married. She did eventually quit drinking and is now a staunch Big Book thumper in Alcoholics Anonymous, but only after several violent episodes. Frankly I think that if she had stuck with her modest beer and wine consumption and never started taking an antidepressant, we might still be married. Sad but true, the only thing more obnoxious than a drunk is a reformed drunk. She's still taking the pills and still has bouts of depression.

It's a well-known bad drug interaction, and one that gets mentioned quite frequently at AA meetings. That's one of the reasons antidepressants all get a "No alcohol" sticker on their prescription labels. My ex was unable to resist the temptation to keep drinking despite warnings from several professionals.

Speaking for myself, I keep checking the Houston Chronicle, and google news to see if any new word is out both about whether or not he is improving, and what's going to happen at the trial.

I don't know how long you've been reading DU remarks, but a great many, many people are pulling for your cousin, and hoping with every fiber that he will someday return to health, somehow, after being the subject of what looks like an attempted murder, done in the worst way possible.

Those skinhead creeps are simple monsters. It's a shame they were left running around lose, after one of them beat an innocent stranger, in an earlier attack, also done in a cowardly way, with the total element of complete surprise, and two adult "helpers."

I read in one article that his family stays with him around the clock at the hospital now. Thank god for that. the boys poured bleach on the victem, trying to destroy DNA evidence? Does this mean they spit on him, in addition to probably killing him, and pouring bleach into his lower regions through the patio umbrella pipe? What DNA were they trying to kill there?

The bleach didn't get thrown into the mix until they had cut him with knives. Can anyone imagine how undiluted bleach in open wounds would feel? How much pain could ANYONE endure? The psychological agony of knowing ANYONE wanted to hurt you this bad would be unbearable.

I don't think enough can be made of this. There is nothing anyone could do to someone which would be much worse, unless it's what happened to Mr. Byrd, at the hands of the Klansmen in the pickup, in Texas.

In the modest Spring subdivision where he grew up, David Tuck had people on edge.

A next-door neighbor once felt it necessary to warn Tuck that he might come after him with a gun if he harmed his teenage daughters.

A Klein Collins schoolmate knew Tuck as someone to avoid when angry.

"He gets joy out of pain," said Jason Savage. "Pain would set him off."

Neighbors and schoolmates expressed little surprise that Tuck, 18, stands accused of savagely beating a 17-year-old boy and kicking a pipe up his rectum. Tuck's friend Keith Robert Turner, 17, has also been charged with taking part in the April 22 beating at a home in a Spring subdivision near Tuck's.

In trying to understand last week's monstrous assault on a Hispanic youth, two conflicting ideas arise. One is horror at the attackers' depravity. The other is how familiar that depravity is.

Two Spring teenagers, one a neo-Nazi, assaulted a male classmate by sodomizing him with a plastic pipe until it crushed his internal organs, stomping his head with steel-toed boots and dousing his body with bleach. As they beat him they allegedly yelled ethnic slurs. The teenagers reportedly were angered when the youth tried to kiss a 12-year-old girl at the gathering they all attended. According to the lead investigator, all the youths were using drugs.

While details of the attack may change as the investigation continues, some parts of the scenario sound horribly familiar. It recalls Emmett Till, the black teenager mutilated and murdered in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at a white woman. And it is reminiscent of the case of Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant New York police sodomized with a broomstick.

Those who study hate-fuelled crime see further violent references. "Curb-stomping " — crushing a victim's skull with steel-toed boots — is depicted in American History X, a film about white supremacists. Neo-Nazis send each other clips of this scene and encourage others to re-enact it, the Anti-Defamation League reports. The boots themselves, plus the craving for ethnic supremacy, also evoke Nazism — which 18-year-old assailant David Henry Tuck is said to revere.

HOUSTON -- The family of a teenage boy who was sexually assaulted with a piece of PVC pipe spoke publicly for the first time since the April 26 attack, KPRC Local 2 reported Monday.

Three aunts and two cousins of the 17-year-old victim held a news conference outside Houston City Hall, along with City Councilwoman Carol Alvarado, state Sen. Rodney Ellis, and members of LULAC, the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League.

The family is supporting state and local leaders' efforts to push for tougher hate-crime laws in Texas.

The beating and assault case of the 17-year-old Hispanic boy is not being prosecuted as a hate crime. Prosecutors said a hate-crime status would not affect punishment because the suspects were charged with felonies.

"I thought (hate crime violence) was over and done with -- like many years ago. Apparently, it's not. So, apparently, we have to do something about it, which is change the law. This was a hate crime, no question about it," the victim's cousin said. "When I first heard it, I wanted just to strangle them. But, now that I think about it, they're kids. I want to know what happened to them. I want to know why their parents weren't there to show them right from wrong."
