Election Test Delayed (WV to test new machines day before election)
A deadline to test electronic voting equipment in West Virginia was pushed back to the day before the May 9 primary election because of various problems or delays with the new machines.

Secretary of State Betty Ireland asked for the extension in an injunction request filed in Kanawha County Circuit Court on Friday afternoon. She sought a delay in the mandatory election-system tests that were to be held Tuesday.
...
Some counties had a software glitch in their new electronic systems and others have not received the necessary software to carry out the election electronically. Because of the delays, counties were bearing down on a required deadline to have equipment tested a week before the election.
...
“To say the least, I am absolutely appalled by ES&S’ delays, and the hardships ES&S has placed on this state,” Ireland said Friday afternoon. “It is inexcusable.”

Ireland said the number of counties reporting problems with ES&S-prepared ballot software has increased to 13 of the 34 counties that have contracts with the company to provide electronic voting systems.

All these PC voting systems are *supposed* to be are glorified adding machines.

Any 1st year computer science student could write software to show candidates, allow you to pick one and count votes properly with very little code. Hell, you could do it using the "Wizard" in Microsoft Access.

Why these machines cost $2500+ each (when a top-of the line tablet PC costs $1400) and have code that so doggone super-secret is a mystery to me.

7. Why?
Well, for one, the machines are bought and paid for with a part of nearly $4 billion from congress. The money is basically a 'free money' program which Tom Delay and friends extracted from the federal budget to pay for these machines. The whole act is what is known as HAVA, what we so label as the Hack America's Vote Act.

Then, too, following the trail from Delay, you can bet these machines are manufactured to steal votes from the left, hence the secret codes.

The machines are part and parcel of the why repukes are in power... thanks to Delay and the stupid dems who helped him after the 2000 Florida fiasco in which Al Gore came to close to being declared the winner of. That election was too close for comfort, so they rolled out these machines to steal the 2004 vote, and they did it, easily.

And they're gonna do it again... unless....

8. They are so transparent, yet they remain 1 step ahead of the Dems
Funny how the GOP cuts funding to every freakin non-terrorism and big oil thing, but manage to find BILLIONS for HAVA.

3. How conveeeeeenient.
Day before, that's plenty of time to work out bugs that already exist and prevent an earlier test.:sarcasm:

4. And what is Plan B in West Virginia?
What are they going to do if the machines don't test properly the day before the election? Junk the machines? Go to a paper ballot and hand counting? Terminate ES&S' contract?

Or just go ahead anyway and "hope" for the best?

5. It's probably
a manufactured excuse to break their contract with ES&S and get their machines switched to Diebold.
