A U.S. Army soldier died Saturday when a roadside bomb hit his convoy near Baghdad, the military said.

The attack occurred southwest of the capital at about 4 p.m., the military said. The soldier's identity was not released.

The attack raised to 70 the number of U.S. service members who have died in Iraq this month, according to an Associated Press count. At least 2,399 members of the U.S. military have died since the war began.

And today from the JACKASS....

Tough fighting still ahead in Iraq, says Bush

Washington, April 29 (AP): President George W. Bush warned Saturday of tough fighting to come and ``more days of sacrifice and struggle'' in Iraq as April drew to a close as the deadliest month for American forces this year.

``The enemy is resorting to desperate acts of violence because they know the establishment of democracy in Iraq will be a double defeat for them,'' Bush said in his weekly radio address as he saluted the emergence of a permanent Government.

``There will be more tough fighting ahead in Iraq and more days of sacrifice and struggle,'' he cautioned. ``Yet, the enemies of freedom have suffered a real blow in recent days, and we have taken great strides on the march to victory.''

3. HOW MANY MORE GEORGIE, HOW MANY MORE?

WHEN A SOLDIER MAKES IT HOME

Halfway around the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier packs his memories
As he leaves Afghanistan
And back home they don't know too much
There's just no way to tell
I guess you had to be there
For to know that war was hell

And there won't be any victory parades
For those that's coming back
They'll fly them in at midnight
And unload the body sacks
And the living will be walking down
A long and lonely road
Because nobody seems to care these days
When a soldier makes it home

They'll say it wasn't easy
Just another job well done
As the government in Kabul falls
To the sounds of rebel guns
And the faces of the comrades
Being blown out of the sky
Leaves you bitter with the feeling
That they didn't have to die

Halfway around the world tonight
In a strange and foreign land
A soldier unpacks memories
That he saved from Vietnam
Back home they didn't know too much
There was just no way to tell
I guess you had to be there
For to know that war was hell

And there wasn't any big parades
For those that made it back
They flew them in at midnight
And unloaded all the sacks
And the living were left walking down
A long and lonely road
Because nobody seemed to care back then
When a soldier made it home

The night is coming quickly
And the stars are on their way
As I stare into the evening
Looking for the words to say
That I saw the lonely soldier
Just a boy that's far from home
And I saw that I was just like him
While upon this earth I roam

And there may not be any big parades
If I ever make it back
As I come home under cover
Through a world that can't keep track
Of the heroes who have fallen
Let alone the ones who won't
Which is why nobody seems to care
When a soldier makes it home

-Arlo Guthrie

4. Pile the bodies higher.

Grass Bush

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

I am the grass bush.
Let me work.

11. When life has meaning only for wealthy supporters, it's easy.
This crowd is almost pathologically averse to caring about human life, except for the tiny percentage that is to use the rest of us as they see fit.

12. A nation blind to their disgrace
http://nobravery.cf.huffingtonpost.com/

No Bravery

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
Tears drying on their face.
He has been here.
Brothers lie in shallow graves.
Fathers lost without a trace.
A nation blind to their disgrace,
Since he's been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

Houses burnt beyond repair.
The smell of death is in the air.
A woman weeping in despair says,
He has been here.
Tracer lighting up the sky.
It's another families' turn to die.
A child afraid to even cry out says,
He has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

There are children standing here,
Arms outstretched into the sky,
But no one asks the question why,
He has been here.
Old men kneel and accept their fate.
Wives and daughters cut and raped.
A generation drenched in hate.
Yes, he has been here.

And I see no bravery,
No bravery in your eyes anymore.
Only sadness.

How many more have to die for nothing? How many more orphans? How many more widows? How many more innocent civilians have to die for George? How many more scandals? How much more corruption? How much more deceipt? How many more parents have to bury their children? And for what? For corrupt CEOs? For corrupt politicians? For corrupt Bush?

as to when the number of dead soldiers becomes greater than the official victim count from 9/11? That should make some headlines.

22. Passed it. 2614+360=2974 > 2801
Include the casualties of the Coalition of the Stupid and Afghanistan and you've gone beyond the casualty count for 9/11 already.

15. "The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est, Pro patria mori."
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.

GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Wilfred Owen
(1893-1918)
Poet, Patriot, Soldier, Pacifist

The Latin title of this poem means:
"Sweet and fitting it is to die for one's country."
(From Horace, Odes, III. ii. 13)
