Retired American officer thanks Canada on website
Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 08:07 PM by flamingyouth

OTTAWA -- A "thank-you Canada" posting on a much-visited American military web site has sparked a mini-debate that's largely complimentary to Canadians.

David Meadows, a retired American navy captain and an author of military fiction, posted his thank-you column in response to the deaths of four Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan on April 22.

"Canada is like a close uncle who constantly argues, badgers, and complains about what you are doing, but when help is truly needed, you can't keep him away: he's right there alongside you," Meadows wrote on the site military.com.

He notes Canada sent ships and rescuers south to the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and to Florida after Hurricane Ivan struck in 2004.

1. Nice
Love the comment section. x(

Military.com - what can one expect?

Wanna impress us? Stop your silly leftist social programs, get your defense spending back up to a point you can go somehwere and do something with out depending on the US's "Charity" and then MAYBE we will think you are back in the game.

All I am asking for is your effort to mirror ours at the same percentages. Where are your two maneuver divisions ready to deploy? Where is your Ability to deploy these two divisions? Where is your ability to control 1-10th of the North American Sealanes? Where is your ability to control 1/10th of the North American Airpsace? Where is your ability to do all of this without the US?

What if a Canadian embassy somewhere was seized and some Canadian Citizens were massacred or others held captive ala Tehran. How would Canadian forces get there if Uncle Sam decided we did not want to help like you did in Iraq? Kiss' em goodbye....Eh?

4. That last comment is particularly ironic
6 of our hostages were rescued by the Canadian embassy.

6. I can't believe someone used the example of an embassy
seizure. Canada got Americans out of the embassy in Teheran.

Thank you, Canada. Not all of us are ungrateful, or have forgotten.

7. There were so many errors in that comment
by that guy. e.g. CFB Suff in Saskatchewan. Now, either he meant CFB Suffield in ALBERTA or he meant CFB Shilo in Manitoba. If he was talking about the Germans than it's Shilo; if about the Brits, it's Suffield. As soon as he made those elementary mistakes, I wrote him off ... not worth listening to.

10. Dark Days in the U.S.A.
We sure do seem to have more than our share of arrogant, ignorant war mongers during these dark days of not-so-benevolent rule by The Great Decider. The closest these cowboy wannabe commentors ever came to wearing a real uniform was in their prep school choirs.
Thank you, Canada. If we had responsible and competent leadership, both our countrys would be much better off. Maybe after November we can start to repair the damage that has been done to my country by short sighted, cocky fools at the helm. Believe me, I am truly ashamed of our United States under bush/cheney/rove. We'll get her back on track.

9. Is there anybody the a55holes don't hate?
The hateful comments are the result of Limbaugh-type brainwashing.

Millions of gullible people will be the downfall of any nation.

I hope we still have enough people with a functioning brain to salvage the USA.

If it's any consolation to our Canadian friends, these people hate just about everybody, not just Canada.

12. It really is true. I was working in a big office complex in Canada that
day, 9/11, and all the wives or husbands of soldiers and navy personel were on the phone cause everyone was on emergency orders to be ready to deploy.

And little Gander Newfoundland, pop 10,000, had 40 JUMBO Jets land at its airport.

We expected great things from the U.S.A. in terms of policy and how to protect its citizens. We all though the U.S.A. would put its best minds together, barriers between academia, military, party politics would be broken and some sorta brilliance would result. Instead we got Karl Rove, Rummy and Cheney. Bad luck for you. Bad luck for all of us.

But on that day - we loved you like never before.

15. So many people all over the USA did great stuff too. I remember
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 09:41 PM by applegrove
a documentary. on I think CNN. in the week after 9/11. And they had two muslim people walk to the site of the wreckage and just hang around to see how they would be treated. And these folk had hidden cameras and all. And New Yorker after New Yorker came up to them and said "are you okay - are people treating you allright?". I balled my eyes out.

18. Canada is a class act
I am always grateful to them and will never forget the broadcasts out of Windsor on 9/11. Urging Canadians to come to the aid of the many stranded Americans during this terrible crisis.

Sometimes I think we don't deserve such a good neighbor.
