Colbert Lampoons Bush at White House Correspondents Dinner-- President Does Not Seem Amused

WASHINGTON A blistering comedy “tribute” to President Bush by Comedy Central’s faux talk show host Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondent Dinner Saturday night left George and Laura Bush unsmiling at its close.

...

Colbert, who spoke in the guise of his talk show character, who ostensibly supports the president strongly, urged the Bush to ignore his low approval ratings, saying they were based on reality, “and reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

...

As he walked from the podium, the president and First Lady gave Colbert quick nods, unsmiling, and left immediately. E&P's Joe Strupp, in the crowd, observed that quite a few sitting hear him felt the material was, perhaps, uncomfortably biting.

Asked by E&P after it was over if he thought he'd been too harsh, Colbert said, "Not at all." Was he trying to make a point politically or just get laughs? "Just for laughs," he said. He said he did not pull any material for being too strong, just for time reasons.

107. COlbert is a comedian, just doing his job.
any idiot knows a true blue comedian lampoons anything reverent. Comedians have been telling truth to power since Steve Allen.sure lots of comedians have been on FBI lists. to get head lines , there is some truth to COlbert's comment about just getting laughs.
you find the material, then it's an open field day. his BUsh stick on Comedy central, to some degree is just that. A stick to get in some jokes.. Don't Americans understand parody. often I think not.

125. It's unsurprising, really.
I saw John Irving last year, and he told a funny anecdote about having been invited to some White House dinner by VP Dan Quayle during the Poppy Bush administration. Being an ardent admirer of Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, which includes blistering indictments of the Reagan/Bush administration's patronage of the Iran-Contra scandal, I had to ask him if he thought any of those Repub idiots had ever read any of his stridently (subtextually) liberal books. That elicited a laugh and his supposition that no, none of them were probably at all familiar with his novels.

These Repub douchebags merely want to latch onto truly talented people, knowing virtually no one who subscribes to their political agenda has any talent whatsoever (Kid Rock, Britney Spears, Toby Keith, etc.) -- except perhaps for self-promotion, theft, dissembling and cowardice.

Colbert's presentation was brilliant.
The shots of the uncomfortable audience reactions
were priceless.

Colbert has lifted himself high above the level of a very clever comedian with this event. He's in a class of his own. What a tremendous person.

I ADORED the dead silence from the people he rightfully addressed. They know he has their number.

I have the feeling that Hilary had long ago learned to take care of herself with these attacks. Chelsea, when she was a child of 13 in the White House, was differnt. Rush Limbaugh was rightly lambasted for calling her a "dog." Talk about he kettle calling the pot black!

With Stephanie Miller and Al Franken, we're slowly getting back with satire and biting wit the RW has not felt for many years. Waht a surprise when THEY are in the glare and on the cutting table.

I can't wait!

because he was lampooning THEM as well as the president.

These people are not doing their jobs, and he blatantly pointed it out. It did NOT sit well with the Talking Head brigade. We're getting ready to set off a freaking nuke in the Nevada desert, and all the media can talk about is the Duke rape case and if they've caught the guy who attacked Natalee Holloway yet.

If the Pretzeldent is willing to send men and women to die or be maimed for life in his illegal invasion, then he can sit and take some well-deserved comical licks like the man he isn't. I hope it made him absolutely furious! I hope he couldn't sleep at all last night, no matter how many shots of Jack Daniels he had, because he was so offended. I hope this moment of reality sticks in his craw, day after day. I hope more people begin to have the bravery to call this charade of a president for what he is. Louder!

16. Wow...

You're right, they didn't get it at all. The light didn't even come on that the reason the crowd wasn't laughing was because they were getting publicly scolded. The President they've felt so uncomfortable criticising was being told he was a criminal to his face, and nobody could cut to a terror alert or a missing girl in Aruba...

That took a lot courage from Colbert. Those were heavy jokes. He wasn't 'playing nice'. He took this opportunity to say something to these people, and he said it well...
of course there's always the possiblitiy that some of the guests weren't laughing because they didn't get the jokes either, such is the state of our journalism.

I couldn't believe it. It was completely surreal. When I first linked to the video, I thought that the whole thing was a joke. You know how they do clips with the President supposedly in the room, I thought it was one of those skits! It took me ten minutes to really believe it was real!

WOW!

22. Looks like Laura and George don't much appreciate humor:

....As he walked from the podium, the president and First Lady gave Colbert quick nods, unsmiling, and left immediately. E&P's Joe Strupp, in the crowd, observed that quite a few sitting hear him felt the material was, perhaps, uncomfortably biting.

Edited on Sun Apr-30-06 07:09 AM by DainBramaged
I woke up early to watch it this morning. Colbert said for the record what the asswipes in the press corps have been in complete denial about; Bush is the worst President in history, and if Pickles didn't like it (from her expressions and resounding refusal to stand and greet Colbert at the end) too fucking bad.

Unlike many others in the audience who were perhaps stunned at the audacious humor of Colbert, at least Antonin had the graciousness to laugh. Personally, I think Colbert has big cajones! He was awesome. I'm glad I turned the DVD recorder on to catch it and rewatch it.

37. Too much truthiness
I watched the whole show rerun on CSPAN last night. It was clear that Colbert made the audience uncomfortable as he lambasted one and all. The Helen Thomas bit was great, a tribute to one of the few (only) White House correspondants who do their job. The show leading up to Colbert was more of the same Bush love-fest by the ass-kissing press corp.

50. Bush CLEARLY patted Colberts arm as Bush left...
And that was when: "(He later said the president told him "good job" when he walked off.)" I watched the end of the show, and Bush clearly greeted Colbert in friendly gesture, either patting or grabbing Colbert's upper arm as Bush passed by, and Colbert was standing near him. Of course Laura Bush can't laugh about it, she gets her JC Penny undies in a bunch when anyone criticizes her little man. The thing I loved about Clinton and Gore was that they could laugh at themselves... I've watched other years, and the humor was just as biting.

75. Colbert's huge nards are causing an eccentricity in the Earth's orbit
He said it.

No, I mean, He said IT. HE FUCKING SAID IT.

He laid it all out crystal clear, in a roundabout way that summed up everything involved perfectly, from the incompetent brush-clearing bush ("mesquite-powered car") to the lapdog press ("You know, fiction"). It was a brilliant, defining moment for political satire. And, true to their colors, the cowardly AP edited him out of their coverage.

Of course the routine was marked by uncomfortable silences. The entire audience, well most of them, figured out early on that they were the mark of the most biting satire delivered in American history, nationally televised, and archived on the 'net for global posterity.

I especially liked the following two:

That captures the essence of the whole Bush administration. Sadly, Bush has had a lot of Tuesday's.

89. truthiness
The stenographic slugs pretending to be reporters have to look in the mirror and know they've not only been exposed, but that they are the butt of satirical humor. Colbert hammered at the root cause of what's gone wrong in America, especially now that the fourth estate has become a fifth column. What passes itself off as news is nothing more than what Pravda TAAS and Izvestia did in the defunct Soviet Union. We have become what we hated in the Cold War. State/corporate controlled news has replaced the free press. Those who count the votes determine election results. Soon most will be working for the same pay, minimum wage. News for profit, be it monetary or favorable legislation, is really fake news. Colbert and Comedy Central as well as Keith Olbermann are the only TV broadcast news venues that regularly criticize the naked em porer. I stopped watching all news during the corporate news driven impeachment of the last duly elected leader of the free world. Newscasters on all the channels were practically drooling over Clinton's lying about a consensual blowjob.
The second hand excuse for a human being now occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue started a war predicated on deliberate lies and all these jerk off reporters can do is cover his miserable ass.
So let's see: getting your dick sucked is a crime, but being a lying scumbag and war profiteer is good.
We need a national strike where everyone who gives a shit stays home from work one day a week. Treasury looting is as un-American as war profiteering.
Our pResident is a nut.

This corrupt Administration has ALREADY far too many enemies (and acquiring more each day) to worry about a little PRESS DINNER. They've got their lapdog media to play it down. That's all they care about.

Remember Citizen, it's time to ramp up the rhetoric for our Iranian Invasion. :scared:

They believe that if *their spin on news* is not covered on their CONTROLLED Corporate Cable stations, that everyone will not care about alternate news sources. Perhaps that worked in the short term, but now, increasingly, the word's getting out ... they are wrong. ;)

I don't know if you remember all in the family. It was intended as social criticism of bigotry. The problem was that bigots identified with Archie Bunker and felt validated and invigorated by him.

Its one of the reasons why I was cold on "Colbert Report". Because I felt that same thing could occur. If you want to believe that your position is the right position and that only idiots won't support you, you'll look to find things that validate you.

So yes, I believe that some neocons could actually believe Colbert was a neocon supporter of Bush.

Hell if they're willing to excuse the Presidents verbal gaffes, why not believe pundits gaffes?

character from the onset. Yes, I concur that a couple of the kool-aid drinking Neo-Cons Cobert has had on his show - did play along with the right wing fanaticism because it's what they know and love. However, his wit and sarcasm were so sharp and biting. Gawd, I loved every minute of it, to include the Helen Thomas chase scene at the end. It was GD Artwork! :P

he says he supports the president, but he doesnt. that is why his claimed support is ostensible. grab a dictionary before you insult someone else's intelligence.

true reactions.

1: very upset because they saw themselves in what Colbert was saying and realized he was right

or 2: they recognized the truth in what he said and agreed w/ him wholeheartedly but were afraid to bust out laughing!

Colbert can do things they can't. And he gets treated like a rock star for it. It's what they all really wanted to do when they signed up for that online journalism class. They all once wanted to tell the truth and change the world and be vindicated and be famous for it. But with bush, truthiness got in the way, and now they have to watch someone else reap the rewards they wished for. As they realize the chimp let them down they will circle in and cannibalize him. IMHO

Lines like 'reality has a liberal bias'.

I thought it was a very BRAVE routine. He used this opportunity to say all the things that never get said! He confronted George W Bush through sarcasm.

I can't believe they had him host. Haven't they ever seen his show?

I was deeply impressed with his routine, and I love Colbert more then ever. He is BRILLIANT!

Bill Kristol was on the Colbert Report last week and he was floored. I don't think he realized what he was getting into until a couple of minutes into the "interview" and the light bulb went on for Bill. It was hilarious.

Colbert's character is such an obtuse, butt-sucking RW hack on the surface. Colbert, otoh, is razor sharp. It's like the buffoon news-model he plays "accidentally" exposes the RW stupidity/hypocrisy he's "covering".

There's no predicting him. By the way, Senator McCain, it's so wonderful to see you coming back into the Republican fold. I have a summer house in South Carolina; look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones University. So glad you've seen the light, sir."

Colbert is a genius. This routine he has going is just perfect for the posturing O'Reilly liars and for the Administration phonies/ creeps/ incompetents/ liars/ thieves they fawn upon. Maverick McCain - what a joke that is! Go Colbert - skewer McCain for betraying patriot Bush and undermining the presnint..

at the same time praising and slobbering all over the "Cute" performance of Bush with his "twin."

Not a word of Colbert:

"At Award Correspondents' Dinner, A Set of Bush Twins Steal the Show."

Bumiller is the NYT's official Bush ass-licker, but this is beyond reproach .She completely avoids the big part of the show.

151. "They" are totally trying to cover up Colbert
We must have seen Bush and Bridges with Bush laughing at "himself" over 8 times yesterday while running in and out and doing yard work. And again this morning on the Today Show with Matt Lauer laughing hysterically at his darling pres. We were so sick of it.

I did not even know about Colbert or what he had done until I came on the computer and my blogs this morning.

After the gathering, Snow, while nursing a Heineken outside the Chicago Tribune reception, declined to comment on Colbert. “I’m not doing entertainment reviews,” he said. “I thought the president was great, though.”

You know all those "hero" movies where one man goes out on a limb to take on power while everyone else shakes in their boots.

Last night Cobert was as brave as those retired Generals who went public. Sure Cobert is a comedian but he brought out all the ills in this corrupt Administration that we DARE not speak, especially with a CONTROLLED MEDIA atmosphere.

Yes, Cobert was IMO braver than these retired Generals at that time because, Dear Leader, was only a few feet away from him. Would that not frighten the average comedian/person? Yet he pulled the complete routine off seamlessly.

Genuinely - God Bless Cobert for speaking truth to power. :patriot:

I want to believe that every act of bravery such as this is making a difference ... cracking the silence of the gutless-wonder Corporate Mass Media.

Let's make them feel ashamed at every damned opportunity? It's hurting their egos that just may get them to report the TRUTH ... or at least OBJECTIVELY approach each news story.

161. Excuse me? Are you talking about Colbert's performance?
That didn't humanize him (nor was it attempted). On the contrary, he verbally kicked the living shit out of Bush and the press corps on national TV. That was one of the most brilliant, harshest and long-overdue verbal assassinations I've ever seen in my LIFE.

Bush's schtick was an attempt to humanize him; Colbert simply murdered him onstage for all to see.
