LAT/AP: Angelides Gets Nod (for CA governor) From State Democrats
Angelides Gets Nod From State Democrats
By Associated Press
10:02 PM PDT, April 29, 2006

SACRAMENTO (AP) -- With a new poll showing he has fallen further behind, state Treasurer Phil Angelides pleaded for the support of delegates at the state Democratic Party convention Saturday, hoping to revive his candidacy for governor with the party's endorsement.

"I need your help," Angelides said at the outset of a speech in which he cast himself as the party standard bearer and his opponent, state Controller Steve Westly, as a political opportunist.

Angelides' won the endorsement of party delegates in a vote late Saturday, an action the state party has not taken in a contested gubernatorial primary since 1990.

To win, a candidate had to receive support from 60 percent of delegates who cast ballots. Angelides won with 67 percent of the delegate vote, campaign spokesman Brian Brokaw said.

How much the internal party decision will help Angelides is unclear....

1. I'm sticking with Westley
He's still the best bet to throw out the Gropinator.

14. I spent the weekend at the convention
Westly might beat the Boobengroper, but Westly will be very much like him. He is not there for the people. He is definitely in there for his ego. I went without an opinion and came away very much for Angelides. Please do more research before the primaries and be very sure that Westly really is who you want him to be.

7. Angelides has my support right now

There is something about Westly that doesn't grab me.

Maybe it's the slick ADS.

However, whoever can get Arnold out has my vote.

9. Angelides addresses exactly what is going wrong politically in CA and US
Working people are losing power while the super wealthy get ultra super wealthy and powerful. Westly, on the other hand, criticizes Angelides for using the tax code to address that imbalance, and then can only cloak himself as a liberal by wearing his Sierra Club endorsement badge. I think it's very obvious who the democrat is in this race.

13. My thoughts exactly

I went to a Meeting The Candidates Forum in Culver City.

The old timers that I talked to were not for Westly.

They said he had loads of money to spend on his campaign but not the quality.

10. Westly is Karl Rove's dream candidate
Big deal. He has money and a street team here on DU. Westly was kissing Schwarzenegger's orange ass when Angelides was kicking it.

I'm sticking with Phil. Westly will lose in the November general. Phil won't.

11. I am undecided.
I saw something about Westley that I liked I think it was that he sued Bush or something.

Other than that I am pretty uninformed on this primary.

12. Phil's the real deal
The convention nominated the candidate with the best Democratic values, not the guy using his mega-money for the TV ads. Look beyond the TV commercials, read about the candidates and find out about each with your own research.
