Ex-Wis. (GOP) Assembly Speaker Gets Prison Term
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/16/AR2006051601083.html

MADISON, Wis. -- The former speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly was sentenced to 15 months in prison Tuesday for using state employees to run Republican legislative campaigns.

Scott Jensen, 45, was one of five lawmakers convicted in a probe of corruption at the state Capitol.

A jury found Jensen guilty in March of misconduct in office and using his public position for private gain. He could have gotten 16 years behind bars.

After he was convicted, Jensen, once one of the most powerful men in state government, resigned the seat he had held for 14 years. He had stepped down as speaker after he was charged.

Circuit Judge Steven Ebert called Jensen's actions a "perversion of the democratic process."

"What occurred was little more than common thievery," the judge said.

excerpt:

Earlier today former Republican lawmaker Bonnie Ladwig was sentenced to 30 days in jail for her role in a political corruption scandal.

The judge said Ladwig could serve her sentence at home with electronic monitoring and he was amazed that the otherwise conscientious veteran lawmaker had gotten caught up in the scandal.

The judge also sentenced former Republican aide Sherry Schultz to four months in jail. She will also be allowed to serve the sentence at home with electronic monitoring. Schultz was convicted of running many political campaigns for Republican candidates while on the state's payroll.

Ladwig directed a state employee to do political campaign work on state time, using state equipment. Ladwig and former lawmakers Steve Foti and Scott Jensen were Republican leaders convicted of ignoring laws separating government work from political campaigning.

3. The headline & article never mentions that Schultz is a Republican.
I've noticed this happening recently. When GOP thugs are sent to jail, the corporate media is under orders to to announce that the thugs are Republicans.
:grr:

4. We need a red state/blue state map showing criminality.
Between indictments and convictions, the repubs seem to have us beat by a mile!
