PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Sen. Lincoln Chafee's re-election campaign has filed a federal complaint accusing his primary opponent, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, of failing to disclose campaign expenses and contributions.
The complaint, signed and mailed to the Federal Elections Commission on Wednesday, alleges that Laffey's Senate campaign broke campaign finance laws by not disclosing that some donations had been collected by the pro-business advocacy group Club For Growth. It also accuses Laffey of underreporting the cost of mailings to voters and accepting aid from a Providence employment agency.
"The rules are there to make sure all candidates are playing on a level playing field," Chafee campaign manager Ian Lang said. "These are examples of the Laffey campaign violating those rules."
Laffey said his campaign has done nothing wrong.
