Democrat Assails Rove's Remarks on Iraq
Representative John P. Murtha, the Pennsylvania Democrat and Vietnam War veteran pushing for a quick withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, today mocked Karl Rove, the president's senior adviser, for championing the war while "sitting in his air-conditioned office on his big, fat backside.".....

When Mr. Murtha was asked today for his reaction to Mr. Rove's remarks, he said: "He's making a political speech. He's sitting in his air-conditioned office on his big, fat backside saying, 'Stay the course.' That's not a plan. I mean, this guy — I don't know what is military experience is, but that's a political statement."

Mr. Murtha's comments came as the Bush administration pressed ahead with its campaign to seize the political offensive on Iraq — a campaign that included President Bush's surprise visit to Baghdad early last week.

.....Democrats contend that the Bush administration's mistakes in Iraq are imposing huge suffering and costs on Americans.
...
Appearing on the CNN program "Late Edition," Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, said that on Tuesday she and Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, would introduce a resolution calling for a phased withdrawal and including a timetable.

5. The NYT is getting worse in its bias. A "democrat", not a
Congressman, not a Veteran, not even his name.

Just a democrat is complaining again. That is the message the title sends.

6. maybe NYT is trying to wake up sheeple before election '06---for those who
don't know who Murtha is, perhaps they know what a "democrat" is.

Maybe. :eyes:

8. Me thinks you give them too much credit
The NYT just two days ago said anti-war protesters were protesting at grave sites! We all know if anyone is protesting at grave sites it is those racist loons from the crazy church, but the NYT chose to slime peace marchers instead.

No. The NYT put the headline "Democrat is complaining" so that everyone would skip over the article thinking just those Dems whining again.

Or I just have a bad case of cynicism, perhaps the drug companies can make a pill for that.

12. Actually homophobic though maybe racists too...
They are the Westboro Kansas Baptist Church and their website is http://www.godhatesfags.com/ .

The blame America's acceptance of homosexuality for the deaths of our soldiers. The "Reverend" Phelps is a sight to behold too like an apparition in a horror movie.

15. Nutcase Fred Phelps has actuallly run for office here in Kansas
several times as a Democrat. He was a strong supporter of the Civil Rights movement. He is virulently homophobic, evil, and nuts--but not racist.

7. OTOH, given the blivet'$ ratings (and, by riccochet, porky'$)...
maybe it's a good one because readers would (finally?) associate the word 'Democrat' with 'speaking truth to power' and if so, I say "it's about time."

9. Maybe the NYT didn't have an agenda...
not knowing that particular readers would see bias in their use of "democrat."

10. They could have said "Rep. Murtha". But maybe they don't want his name
too well known?

11. They used Rove's name
If Rove (or any GOPer) stands up for an issue the corporate media uses the GOPer's name in the headline. But when a Democrat stands up for an issue, the headline always says Democrat, never the name of the person who is making the stand.

It is a tactic the corporate media have been using, not just the times but all of them.

16. Why not "Rep Murtha Assails Republican Remarks on Iraq"
???

Maybe it's because the Times feels Rove is part of the family, and Murtha an outsider.
Or maybe that's how they want their readers to feel.

19. Minor complaint: Murtha should have said "ass" instead of "back-side."
It would have gotten a little more play and would have baited more Republicans if he had.

Even still- Jack has the right idea- there is no more room for mincing words with these crooks.

I think Murtha gave an appropriate response- and I wish more DEMs could be as blunt & truthful.

Good for Murtha- we need MORE plain talk like this.

20. If he would have used the word ass, then the issue would
have been politicos just being potty mouths. Saying big fat backside paints a clear picture of a big butt just sitting around.

Plus "big fat backside" can get into print headlines, many papers would not put "ass" in the headline. IMHO.

21. I know- we always have an excuse for not being more agressive.
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 03:30 PM by Dr Fate
I've heard the same hand-wringing excuse used when DEMS are too frightened to call Bush a "liar" too.

Where were all these rules against using "hot" language when is was Republicans talking about Clinton?

I seem to remember them calling him a "liar" an "Sociopath" a "Pimp" and all kinds of stuff.

He should have said "ass"- no- no-he should have said "lying ass" or "coward ass." NO- "lying, coward ass"- perfect.

The comment as it is will be 100% forgotten within a day if not w/i hours. Mark my words.

"Hot" language would have kept the comment in the news cycle longer and would have "fooled" corporate media into giving more air time for his comments- plus more Murtha interviews so he could "explain himself."

You really think moderates & swing-voters would be offended by that word? Not me. Normal, everyday people use words like "ass" and "liar" everyday- despite fake media/GOP outrage.
