Ex-Wis. Official to Remain Free on Bail
Judge Rules Former Wis. Official Allowed to Remain Free on Bail During Appeal of Conviction
MADISON, Wis. Jun 19, 2006 (AP)— The former speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly can remain free on bail while he appeals his conviction for misconduct in office, a judge ruled Monday.
Scott Jensen, 45, was convicted in March of directing taxpayer-funded aides to campaign for Republican candidates on state time during the 1998 and 2000 election cycles. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
Jensen, a 14-year Assembly member from Waukesha, was one of five lawmakers convicted in a state corruption probe. He had stepped down as speaker after he was charged and resigned after he was convicted.

Dane County Prosecutor Brian Blanchard had urged the Circuit Judge Steven Ebert to order Jensen to prison next month, saying Jensen had not showed a likelihood that he would win on appeal.
