Rice Warns N. Korea Against Missile Test
Rice warns N. Korea against missile test
By ANNE GEARAN, AP Diplomatic Writer

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice leveled a warning Monday that "it would be a very serious matter and indeed a provocative act" if North Korea tested a long-range ballistic missile.

Rice's remarks came after Bush administration officials said North Korea has apparently finished loading fuel into a ballistic missile, the latest signs that the reclusive communist state will soon test a weapon that could reach the United States.

Testing would abrogate several North Korean commitments and "it would be taken with utmost seriousness," Rice said at a news conference.

U.S. intelligence indicates that the long-range missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2, is assembled and fully fueled, said two officials, who requested anonymity because the information comes from sensitive intelligence methods.

Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 07:18 PM by New Government
Is there something wrong with this picture? Can we not slam this idiotic administration when they are wrong - but support them when they are right? WWIII will come about by Kim Jong-Il just as fast as by George W. Bush in the Middle East...to suggest otherwise shows a hatred for Bush that borders on pathological. This is why some call many of us the HATE AMERICA crowd. That's bullshit for most of us, but for some others, I can't help but wonder. OR, the other option, and I think about it all the time.....that people are here to simply make ridiculous statements to make DU look bad. I know it happens. This thread is full of posts that make me wonder about both of the above options. Because, really, nobody can honestly defend Kim Jong-Il. Nobody.

11. Unfortunately, North Korea has the same rights as the U.S.
There is nothing saying they can't test missiles over the open water, same as the U.S. does.

They won't launch a nuclear strike on the U.S. Consider the relative strengths of the two countries:

- U.S. ===> ten thousand nuclear warheads, thousands of nuclear warheads on ICBMs, thousands of nuclear warheads on SLBMs, thousands of nuclear warheads loaded on long range bombers.

- North Korea ===> maybe ten nuclear warheads, maybe a dozen untested ballistic missiles.

It would be suicide and their leadership is no more suicidal than any other state leadership in the world.

16. What on earth are you talking about?
"Bash the U.S. over North Korea?"

"HATE AMERICA crowd"

"ridiculous statements to make DU look bad"

"defend Kim Jong-Il"

I saw none of the above in any of the posts on this thread.

Do you honestly believe the U.S. should decide which countries have a right to weapons and which countries do not have such a right, even as the U.S. possesses, by far, the most powerful weapons on earth? If so, you have much to learn.

If the North Koreans are "paranoid" as many claim, it is certainly to be expected. They have watched millions of their fellow citizens perish beneath the carpet bombings and chemical attacks which they sustained during the so called Korean War, courtesy of the United States of America. What would be your response if such horrors were inflicted on your country? Enduring such attacks would surely cause considerable trauma both individually as well as on a national level.

The best way to deal with North Korea is through negotiation and dialog, not threats. This very thing was being attempted by South Korea, China and Russia as they tried to draw North Korea into an economic alliance called the Iron Silk Road. The purpose was to create a major rail based passenger and trading hub on the Korean peninsula.

Things were looking up until shortly after the "axis of evil" speech by the Bush dross. Some believe that portion of the speech was designed specifically to disrupt the negotiations between North and South Korea, as shortly thereafter North Korea withdrew. They have since resumed negotiations.

Whatever the motives of the Bush administration and its backers may be, you may rest assured it has nothing to do with the good of mankind or even the United States. Please forgive me if I never support them (the Bush administration) in any capacity as I believe they are motivated exclusively by a desire to acquire more wealth and power even at the expense of all else. If to you this appears anti-American or "pathological", then I guess I'll just have to learn to live with that.

We're only saying...the US only attacks helpless countries and usually only Muslim countries because apparently we are hopeless bigots.

King Dubya forced this situation. He forced these countries to get nukes when he proved that he would willfully invade anyone if they didn't have them. They have no choice now. Either they nuke up or they die like Iraq.

The world survived all that.

These missiles are supposed to be able to reach Alaska at best (if they worked and if he had something to put on them). It would be personal and national suicide if he attempted anything of the sort. Calling him a whacko doesn't actually make him one, especially one who is keen on self-destruction.

27. Read what he said again
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 07:42 PM by New Government
He said Stalin and Mao. Stalin never possessed the means to deliver nuclear weapons to the United States. He died in 1953. Mao's military was strictly rag-tag. The Sino-Soviet conflict prevented Mao from having any sort of serious missile threat to the United States in his lifetime. He specifically said, "Stalin and Mao."

"Or do you just make things up?"

Typical angry uncivil behavior. Makes me wish I was born a generation or two, or three sooner, so I could have avoided all this keyboard commando rude crap that has made me almost want to unplug the damn computer and head for the hills. Nobody can discuss things without these kinds of silly lines that really piss me off. Especially when I was right.

And here I am being the same shitty way. What is this all doing to me? To all of us?

18. Shhhh...
you know you're not supposed to criticize a deranged Communist leader who hates the United States and who might nuke us, kill millions of our citizens and reduce our country to a pile of ashes.

I don't know who scares me the most: the wackos on DU or the wacko foreign dictators who want to kill us. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

Kim Jong Ill is a megalomaniacal, mentally unstable, murderous Communist dictator who is rattling his sabers because he wants attention from the U.S. and the rest of the world because Iranian leader Ahmadinejad has been getting most of the headlines because of his insane ramblings about Israel and the Holocaust.

Our pathetic administration is doing NOTHING to help the problem so they trot out Condy Rice in her custom-made suit to say something stupid like the situation is "provocative." What a useless bunch of nitwits the Bush administration and their spokespeople are.

In spite of these perverts we have in the White House I still love my country and want a decent government to run this country the way it should be ran.

> Do I have that right?

No you don't. I fully admit that Communist tyrants exist in the same
way as other tyrants exist. I understand that there are, to quote the
post I responded to, "wacko foreign dictators" in the same way as (or
currently worse than) your own home-grown wacko wannabe dictator.
The bit that is the product of the fevered imagination is the
paranoid "they wanna kill us" hence the phrasing ...

>> "wacko foreign dictators who want to kill us" are the products of
>> your fevered imagination

... or to make it even more obvious ...

>> "wacko foreign dictators who want to kill us" are the products of
>> your fevered imagination

Clearer?

> Has it ever occured to you that there really ARE nutcases in this
> world who want to kill. You. Tonight. Wake the hell up!

Ah well, they failed as it is now tomorrow morning :hi:

I am fully aware that there are nutcases in this world who want to
kill people in general (rather than me personally) as I have lived
through the attempts of several flavours of IRA doing this (amongst
others). On the other hand, I have also so far failed to be killed
by a car crash, train crash, plane crash, ferry sinking, starvation,
thirst, disease, cell degeneration, friendly fire, WP, radiation
poisoning, whatever but fully understand that this situation cannot
continue indefinitely ... something will get me in the end.

I find the "My God! They're all trying to kill me!" school of news
reporting to be tiresome so ignorant people trying to lecture me
about history merely serves to highlight the effect that the former
are having on the latter ... yes, I'm talking about you "friend".

> Think Chamberlain - remember Hitler.

Think Hitler, remember Stalin.
Think Hitler, remember Prescott Bush.
Think Hitler, remember Dresden.
Think Hitler, remember Nagasaki.
Think Hitler, remember Pol Pot, Mao, Amin, Pinochet, ...

Any other trite yet content-free soundbites that you want to get off
your chest? I'm not the one who has to wake up out of his programming.
Or maybe you can "take the blue pill" and go back to your pointless
paranoia, ignoring real problems (over-consumption, pollution, etc.)
in favour of media & politician hype against the bad-guy du jour.

I don't post on British boards and bitch. Seriously..... But, with that, I was pleasantly surprised to see you mention Dresden. The great "unmentionable" of WWII. It seems Hitler's crimes are the ONLY crimes allowed to be discussed. Even various interpretations of history are not allowed in some places. In fact, as we both know, to speak out in some parts of Europe on anything other than "approved history" can risk JAIL. Maybe we can agree on that? (I always like things that end well no matter what came before). :)

33. WWII was an American atrocity?
Let's continue your little game:
Think Hitler, remember The Holocaust

Haha, so the US committed an atrocity when we bombed Dresden? Nagasaki?

Come on, the German population's nationalism was a part of the problem in WWII and what kept Hitler in power. In a MAJOR conflict like that one, population/industrial centers are targets. Need to break, morale and the production capacity of the war making machine that Nazi Germany was. Of course, the Luftwaffe stuck to military targets in the UK right?

As for Nagasaki, the Japanese continued to fight on after Hiroshima. The only way they were going to quit the war was to be totally broken as a people.

By the way, both the Germans and the Japanese had nuclear programs as well. If you think they wouldn't have used them, then you are definitely crazy.

Hate Bush, Hate what America is right now, but catch a clue and realize that WWII was not an American atrocity committed on anyone.

Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 10:08 AM by shadowknows69
and pointing at Iran and NK when the BS run up to the Iraq war started. That's where I can ALMOST understand a strategic motivation behind the Iraq war. Iraq 1 was very much used to get us military coinage in the real world, and it worked. We kicked ass so hard and fast that the rest of the world definitely took notice. That's also when the world probably figured out we would eventually use that military coinage to become an imperialistic power. I believed Clinton was well on the way to altering the course the PNAC had tried to set us upon and that's when they took off the kid gloves and decided just to take the country. Clinton's Bridge to the 21st century has been bombed by insane neo-cons and now the new century will be the century of generational war. The neocons tried the same thing with Iraq II. We'll crush what's left of Saddam's army so quick that no one will dare fuck with us in the middle east after that. Then we decided to stay. Now the world knows that we, like most other empires, have no hope of successfully occupying a country without commiting near genocide to do so. The gloves are off all over the world now and I think everyone is getting ready for the messy endgame to the US empire.

34. In 1998, NK lobbed a missile over northern Honshu Island, Japan
that landed several hundred miles from the nearest Aleutian island to North Korea, Attu. A few years later, he conducted a test with an extremely short-range missile (60km, which is about the same distance as Dallas to Forth Worth), and repeated that test one or two years ago. There have been rumors of remnants of a North Korean missile found in Alaska, but I think they were started by some attention-seeking politician and, to the best of my knowledge, have never been substantiated.

So, Kim's known range is a thousand miles or two, long enough to hit Japan or South Korea but too short for anywhere else. But accuracy is something else, and he's never been reported to have accuracy to even hit Tokyo, much less Chicago or Hawaii.

Am I crazy or does anyone else remember? ANyhoo my tin foil hat tells me that this would be the perfect time (since they're running that survival of government drill this week where all "essential" personnel is going into bunkers) for NORAD to say "The NK test was a lie! They fired it right at San Francisco. We must nuke them now in case they have any more!!!" Fallout and hilarity ensues. Yes these are the nightmares I have. Welcome to what Bush has done to my brain.
