Republican soft-money group seeks to use members of Congress in fund raising

The Republican Governors Association is asking election regulators whether it can use federal officials to collect corporate and other large donations despite a broad ban on them raising that type of cash.

The RGA separated from the Republican National Committee last year so it could raise corporate, union and unlimited donations known as soft money. A campaign finance law that took effect last November bars the RNC and other national party committees from soliciting soft money for any purpose.

The law also includes a broad ban on the raising of soft money by members of Congress and other federal officeholders and candidates, and prohibits everyone from using such donations on federal election activity.

The Federal Election Commission has said the law doesn't entirely ban federal politicians from raising money for state and local elections, however. (snip/...)
