Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont pledged yesterday to match donations made via the Internet to his Senate primary challenge of Sen. Joe Lieberman for the remainder of the campaign, sparking a war of words between the Democratic foes on the influence of special interests in the race.

In an e-mail to his campaign volunteers and supporters, Lamont made the pledge to invest more of his substantial personal fortune in the race. Through last Friday, Lamont had already contributed $2.5 million to his Senate bid and spent about $1.9 million. His campaign had $276,976 cash on hand remaining, compared with about $4.3 million for Leiberman, who has not donated to his own campaign.

: "And while his campaign has raised millions from those who profit from war, high gas prices and expensive prescription drugs, over 15,000 individuals have contributed to our effort, the vast majority in small dollar donations."

snip:
Lieberman spokeswoman Marion Steinfels condemned the fundraising e-mail and said 96 percent of 26,200 donations to Lieberman's campaign have come from individuals. More than half of those donations were for less than $200, according to Steinfels, who called on Democrats to look at Lamont's personal financial interests.

1. When she says...
... that 96 percent of 26,200 donations "came from individuals", what does that mean?

I'll bet it means that 25,152 donations came from individuals and 1,048 came from corporations, PACS, whatever.

But what about the dollar amount? It could easily be 50/50 using those numbers. Which makes them highly irrelevant.

Tell us HOW MANY DOLLARS came from where. Then you might have a point, a really big "maybe".

2. good point, it's easy to manipulate the "individual contribution" term
Edited on Fri Jul-21-06 08:52 AM by wordpix2
Sometimes corporations ask their people to contribute to a candidate individually and then "bundle" the contributions. We don't know if that is the case here.

I found more significant the last statement from Lieberman's campaign that Lamont's "personal financial interests" should be "looked into." WTF? Lamont is a rich guy but that doesn't mean he's done anything wrong to gain his fortune.

3. Ha! She brings up Halliburton again.
"I think that's very interesting coming from the man who owns $50,000 in Halliburton stock," Steinfels said.

EVEN though-

Now it turns out that Lieberman was playing Mark Davis for a fool, and he himself holds Halliburton stock. It is the third largest holding, in fact, in his "Victory Fund" mutual fund (PDF of Lieberman’s 2005 Personal Finance Disclosure Statement, p. 7, line 7).

And check the YTD earnings on the guy who profits from his support for the war.

11. Any question why Lieberman supports the war?

Halliburton stock has given him his largest return.

6. "Lieberman Finds Favor Among Donors That Usually Support GOP"

"When it comes to supporting candidates for public office, the Associated General Contractors of America gives 90 percent of its campaign contributions to Republicans.

(Many of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman’s contributions come from outside Connecticut...picture caption)

And then there is Senator Joseph I. Lieberman.

The group, which represents the construction industry, wrote a $4,000 check last month to Mr. Lieberman, the Connecticut Democrat who is facing a spirited challenge for his party’s nomination from a political novice, Ned Lamont. The money was just a sliver of the $260,000 he has collected from political action committees since March."

"Pro-Israel Groups Rally in Support of Lieberman
HARTFORD, Conn. --Pro-Israel groups, afraid of losing one of their staunchest supporters in Congress, are pouring money into beleaguered Sen. Joe Lieberman's campaign as he tries to fend off a tougher-than-expected primary challenge.

The three-term lawmaker is struggling to dispatch millionaire businessman Ned Lamont in the Aug. 8 primary. Lamont's fierce criticism of Lieberman's backing of the Iraq war and perceived closeness to President Bush have won him followers among hard-core Democrats. The primary is Aug. 8 and Lieberman has said he will run as an independent if he loses.

Pro-Israel political action committees have donated to his campaign and have urged their national membership to give generously now and later, if Lieberman is forced to run as an unaffiliated candidate."

In-State $3,630,224 (20.4%)
Out-of-State $14,199,065 (79.6%)
No State $50,800 (0.3%)
