Blanco asks Bush to declare Aug. 29 national day of prayer

Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco has written a letter to President Bush asking him to declare Aug. 29 as a national day of prayer. The date marks the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall.

Blanco also invited the president to Louisiana during the week leading up to August 29 to participate in events honoring the lives lost due to Hurricane Katrina, according to a news release on the website of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, www.lra.louisiana.gov

1. Fuck that noise.
Why can't we have a National Day of Ritualistic Purification Floggings instead? I'll even buy a nice chain flail for Blank-o and * to use. They can bloody each other up something fierce. Their gawd *loves* blood.

Will Bush accept the challenge to his faithiness?
Does he dare decline to create another National Day of Prayer when put on the spot to do so?

39. Actually it's a cunning chess move...
He either has to go down there and face the people whose lives he royally apathetically flogged up, or go on record refusing to attend a "day of prayer". It's his own personal wedge issue!

5. I have no problem with this
The lives lost need to be remembered. As well as the inaction of this idiot president.

Maybe a Day of Remembrance would be more appropriate but not only those on the conservative right believe in prayer.

12. Only if
we all pray by sitting on our roofs with big signs that say HELP US like the Katrina survivors had to do, or if we cluster to pray in civic centers with no lights, air conditioning, food, water, or sanitary facilities. And let's make it a whole week while we're at it. I usually don't pay much attention to events like the National Day of Prayer, figuring if people want to pray, it's fine with me, but ever since Oliver North was the honorary chairman of the National Day of Prayer a few years ago, I find the whole proposition blasphemous, exploitative and disgusting.

13. For what are the people supposed to pray?
Does the all knowing god need petitions to slay Lebanese? Does he not know the injustice and the lies of a president who stole the office are immoral and obscene as well as all the rest of his policies that have caused suffering, degradation and the loss of prestige of a nation that was once praised for it's humanitarian concerns? Does the god need to be petitioned to keep up the abuses of the 'enemy combatants" we are torturing? Petition the god by praying--but for what? A continuence of this barbarism, whuile others will state that all human beings are "god's children"?

I say this kind of sh*t is just plain nonsense and to give this war criminal, Bush, a platform upon which to further appeal to the dispensationalists, the cult of the "rapture" and the eagerly awaited "armageddon" in which the killing of millions will be processed by this gentle, all knowing god, (not) and those who follow that, are dancing in joy at the killings and murders of little babies and children because soon they will be in heaven. So kill them all, so heaven will be a certain thing for them. They actuallty love the killing--it signifies their place in heaven.

Some are calling for English to be declared our national language. Flags are allowed to fly any place you damn well please. Again someone in Congress will be calling for Christianity to be declared the national religion. Nothing binds a nation together by such declaratons, it is called Fascism.

20. This is a good political move
I smiled when I read this. Blanco is being challenged and calling for a national day of prayer helps position her in a fairly conservative state. It also highlights the Katrina fiasco and helps bring attention to the continued plight of her state. As an added bonus, it hurts *. He will have difficulty rejecting a national day of prayer and justifying that to his religious base.

25. God is confused
He ( of course, to most, he is a he) has heard from the Christians, Hindus, Muslims and certain other believers in a divinity; so far he has turned a blind ear. I guess he doesn't want to take sides, it's so confusing. He's been hearing prayers since human have been wondering who's in charge. Shouldn't we know by now that we are in charge of our own destinies.

34. I will offer a chicken to the Santeria god Changó

Changó - santo of war and thunder

Changó is one of the most popular santos in Cuba. He is the very symbol of what a Cuban male would like to be. He is strong, dances wildly and passionately and knows the art of captivating women. Changó is furthermore fond of telling stories, though they will often surpass reality.

Natural elements

Changó owes part of his strength to the fact that he is the guardian of thunder and lightning. His power is often symbolised by a sword and an axe. The axe is also found in Nigeria, but the sword comes from the Catholic saint of Santa Barbara.

Personality traits

Changó is not only the santo of natural elements such as thunder and lightning, but also of human qualities such as strength and sensual appeal. He is also considered the divinity of dancing and music.

Catholic saint and day of celebration

It may seem strange that Changó is linked to a female Catholic saint, Santa Barbara, as he is the very manifestation of manly qualities. The explanation may lie in one of the old stories about Changó, in which he had to dress up as a woman to flee from an enemy that wanted to kill him. Both are celebrated on 4 December.

Dwelling place

It is said that Changó lives in the royal palm, which is also Cuba's national tree. In the devotee's home he lives in a wooden receptacle called batea, which is placed with the tureens on the altar.

41. Here's what the bible-thumpers need to remember about their precious
"national day of prayer".

Per orders of the Big Guy in the guise of Jeebus:

But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. But when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. --- Matthew 6:6-7

44. Could be a subtle ploy.
By asking for a national day of prayer, maybe she thinks Rove is more likely to go along. And then once the cameras come down on August 29th, they can film the lack of progress in getting the city going again.

Just a hope. However slim. That it's not just political pandering on her part.
