At 72, a Dogged Rather Is Not Yet Ready to Yield
By JACQUES STEINBERG

Published: November 30, 2003

ALLAS — At lunchtime in a hotel dining room here the other day, Dan Rather stood before a group of car dealers, jewelry store owners and furniture wholesalers, sounding more like a politician on the hustings than the network news anchor he is every weekday evening.

Flanked by images of himself projected on oversized screens, Mr. Rather sang the praises of KTVT, the local CBS station he had come to visit, and to help. "KTVT is hotter than a Laredo parking lot in this market," he told the crowd of advertisers, both actual and prospective

2. Pathetic in what way?
He was one of the first reporters to stand up to Nixon (in a rather famous exchange). He's a hell of a news man.

6. Well, here's my personal reservation about Rather...
Soon after the JFK assassination, Rather, a reporter from the local Dallas afiliate of CBS, made the claim that he had personally seen the shooting from his position on top of the Triple Overpass, very near the Grassy Knoll. He also claimed that JFK's had been thrown forward instead of back and to the left as seen in the Zapruder film. Subsequent work done by film analysts have failed to verify Rather's statement concerning where he was at the time of the shooting.

Additionally, he was one of the first reporters to hop aboard the "Oswald was the lone nut gunman" wagon. A short while after that, he became CBS' White House correspondent to interface with the new president, fellow Texan LBJ.

When push comes to shove, Rather will back the party line...regardless of which party is in power.

5. kinda wierd Dan Rather story
I saw him when I was a freshman at UCLA during the Dukakis/Bush 1 debate. He looked 10 years older when I saw him than he does now, 15 years later. He either has the picture of Dorian Grey, or a very good doctor.

I like rather, but he backs down. He at least barks, unlike Jennings or Brokaw, but he never bites.

8. This is how they work at their intimidation
They put out the rumor that he is about to be retired so he will report what they want reported. This is thuggery at it's best. If even Dan Rather is subject to this sort of intimidation any new anchor will tow the line easily. Republican thuggery.
