Saudi Interrogators Use New Technique
Forget the bread-and-water routine. Saudi Arabian interrogators often bring a Quran, the Muslim holy book, to their prison interviews, using a technique that has proved successful in eliciting information from al-Qaida captives and reorienting them to less violent religious beliefs.

The tactic, similar to the way cult deprogrammers work in the United States, has impressed American counterparts enough that Saudi intelligence was permitted to use some of the principles on their citizens being held at the U.S. detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Saudi officials said.

2. This can work
A saying of the Prophet predicted that the worst threat to Islam would come from within. It says to beware of people coming and perverting the Qur'an. This could be persuasive, especially to those who are low-level al-Qaeda and not very sure of their beliefs. The technique of starting with a seeming hard-line cleric and then going to a moderate, building trust, and then talking about what the Qur'an says can work. Take a phrase that begins almost every sura (chapter) in the Qur'an:

In the Name of God, Who is Mercy and Compassion
(a cleric can talk of what mercy and compassion means; he can tell stories of the Prophet's life and the lives of his followers, and how they showed mercy, even when they were hurt or injured by others and could have retaliated by violence but, instead, did not)

There are many many passages in this great book that can show a person that it is not right to resort to violence except in very very extreme circumstances, which are not in play in the world now. The Qur'an teaches that the innocent should be protected (as the Saudis did by making sure the families of the rebelling officers got their pay and were taken care of-see the article).

I can really see where this type of work with prisoners can do some real good, because I do believe that many of the al-Qaeda operatives have been brainwashed, like in a cult.

3. 1984 Come True
You must love Big Brother before we kill you... and you can die pure in your beliefs.

Amazing. It's coming true in SA. Who would have thought that?

4. Big Mother perhaps?
The prince made sure "their wives got their salary checks, that the kids were doing well in school, that the families were taken care of. The wives and kids hadn't done anything wrong," Kern said.

I'm missing the Room 101 analogy: its premise was torture, not showing more humanity than would be expected in turn. You may have a romanticized notion of al-Q since they're "the enemy of my enemy", but their ultimate target is uppity women, gays, humanists, secularists, pluralists, and everyone else Pat Robertson hates.

7. The point of the "Ministry of Luv"
Was to make the political subversive come to love Big Brother. Only once he was cured, could Winston be executed. Once he loved Big Brother, he could be executed while his mind and his heart was pure. And The Party was therefore perfect, truly loved by all, even the dissidents.

So in Room 101, the point of the torture was to emphasize the fallability of the human body and mind. The ability of the mind and body to change it's perceptions was what Winston was taught through pain and mental anguish. And the main purpose was to elevate The Party to god-like status, given its immortality and unyielding "truth". "The Party is immortal," O'Brien said.

Much like those in the "reprogramming" in the Saudi case, where they are also fucked with until they have no idea what they are. It didn't get past me that this was not a "DE"programming, but a "RE"programming form of mind control. they just swap one cult belief structure with another, presumably beneficial one to the interrogators. The prole, or in this case the prisoner, is of no consequence on his own, but only as part of The Party does he have a life at all.

Hence my comparison.

5. Nothing New Here
This technique was very successfuly used by the Spanish Inquisition. Recant your heretical beliefs and you will be spared from the torturers.
