First Lady: I Want to Go to Afghanistan
WASHINGTON — Just three days after President Bush returned from a surprise trip to Baghdad, his wife Laura Bush (search) disclosed that she is considering a trip to Afghanistan next spring.

She said: "I'd really like to go. I hope I'll have a chance."

Her statement caught her aides by surprise, but it wasn't the first time that Mrs. Bush had disclosed a secret. She announced that the president would make a state visit to Britain long before it was announced officially.

The first lady made the comment as she was discussing the president's trip to Baghdad last week, in which he served Thanksgiving dinner to U.S. troops at Baghdad airport and met with Iraqi officials during a two-and-a-half-hour stay.

Mrs. Bush says her husband called from Air Force One (search) not long after takeoff from Baghdad and told her -- in her words -- "how sweet it was."

She said that she was sorry that she didn't get to go with the president, and would like to visit Iraq and Afghanistan in the future.

If they love this country like they claim to,then they ought to do the honorable thing and remove themselves from it. Our country would be so much better off without those two hypocrite idiots.

41. just in time to welcome the Taliban back into power
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 05:37 PM by SemperEadem
since her husband's administration pretty much dropped Afghanistan off on the side of the road while they went after Saddam, the Taliban has been growing back, unchecked, in Afghanistan... and for that to happen means that Bush wasted our troop and our money by going there and not finishing what he went there to do---like father, like son.

38. I'm not as sanguine as you towards Hillary
Hillary eagerly voted for war in Afghanistan and Iraq. When not posing for photo ops, she's done her share to help create refugees.

I quite agree that Laura Bush is a farce. But why ennoble Hillary when she doesn't deserve it? While attacking the opposition we can at least be honest about what Hillary stands for in foreign policy- whether in Afghanistan, Iraq, or on the West Bank. Her uncritical support for US policy has helped bring considerable suffering to the civilian targets of the US and Israeli militaries.

In other respects - particularly her early legal work and later efforts for health care - I admire her public policy. But where foreign policy is concerned, she's a big disappointment: just another willing servant of empire.

I hope this piece of shit is not ruining the interior of AF1.

Anyone know if the "No Smoking" air ban is in force on AF1, or any other official flight?

I have heard that Pickles smokes constantly, and does not allow the media to film/photograph her when she is smoking.

Cheers

32. I saw her on TV the afternoon of 9-11
She was so out of touch with reality it was scary. She was supposed to make a statement in order to reasure the American people and instead she looked and sounded like some airhead who forgot to wear her shoulder pads that day. It seemed that the fact that 1000's of Americans were laying under tons of rubble formerly known as the WTC hadn't sunk into her beautiful mind.

rather than her poor taste in clothes. Derivative, unimaginative follower of Hillary Clinton. It wouldn't have crossed her mind to go there if not for the unspoken comparison to Senator Clinton's visit.

Maybe Laura could put together a book symposium and then cancel it when the authors point out the lack of female advancement in Afghanistan. You know, just so she doesn't alienate the Promise-Keeper vote.

43. Well, I actually do not know what to say about this abomination of a
chained woman. Is it not time to be whipped into submission, be silenced and be relegated to the pits? How dare you all say anything about the sweet little darling, defenseless and vapid Laura! That's the pits and that simply is not fair to the pitiful princess of the pitiful twins--She needs to be protected at all costs, according to some because, well because, it is the pits to criticize a dump o lump o frump who has millions of dollars and could care less what she looks like--she is really the pits.

Now, let us be realistic-Laura is jealous of Hillary? Well maybe, but I rather think that someone in the White House has decided that Laura must compete with Hillary at all costs. She is stressed because of it, as I think she probably knows she has been upstaged and is not on the same intellectual level as Hillary.

She is neither qualified nor does she have the brain power to compete with HIllary. Further, she is not a senator who sits on committees and has a constiuency--all Laura is is a Stepford floppy who has just floated along, satisfied with the wealth she has married into because she can travel, shop and eat at will wherever she wants--and she knows it, and she is pathetic, having chosen this life for herself. Hillary has a perfect reason to go to visit Afganistan and Iraq. She is a duly elected Senator who has a brain and who is savvy and smart. Laura is trying to make it up to the level of HIllary, but all she can do is weakly follow what she is told to do by her husband's handlers. What a pathetic piece of crap.
\
Now, I would like to know what happened to all of those Afganistan women that Laura told to sew for the three million children in Afganistan who needed uniforms to go to school. Why do we never get reports back on how this Laura initiative is going. She sent (not really her) 200 sewing machines to women in Afganistan, so they could sew school uniforms for the children--and, horrors, look at the pattern of the uniform these poor children were to wear--I am not surprised, if Laura was the one who decided upon it's pattern

Ugh--it is total subordination of the spirit of childrenhood, dressing them in this awful garment. Laura managed to force others into her dowdy look, but this time it was the little children.

Yup, she left them to themselves--all sort of corporate contributions were made to Afgansitan to facilitate the children going back to school.

But,have they? Why do we not get back a report on how this Laura initiative is progressing. Are the women really sitting down sewing school uniforms out of this depressingly, dank fabric?

The frump wants to go to Afganistan because another women, a woman who has some sense of responsibility, has gone there in her roll as a senator, and the frump is being ordered to give this senator some competition. Laura will be far out of her league to compete with Hillary. All we will see, if the frump does go, is more photo ops and no substance. She is vapid, lacking intelligence and the will to do anything at all except that which she is ordered to do.
