Walk out as Cambodia passes adultery law

September 01, 2006 07:43pm

CAMBODIA'S Parliament passed a law today which could send adulterers to jail for up to a year.

The vote prompted a walkout by Opposition MPs who said the law carried echoes of the Khmer Rouge and the Taliban in a country which should be tackling poverty and corruption instead of legislating about morality.

But the Government argued the law would help reduce pervasive corruption by removing the temptation for officials to steal from state coffers to maintain mistresses as well as halting what it called a decline in morality.

“This law is also aimed at reducing corruption, because when government officials have more women, they seek more financial sources to support their girls,” National Assembly Chairman Heng Samrin said.

1. Wow. Even if our fundies do manage to create an American theocracy,
I can't see them ever passing a law like this. Why, mistresses are one of the established perks of becoming a wealthy, powerful religioso.

10. And where would we get our tabloid fodder>>>

A chance encounter between police and a speeding car on October 7, 1974, eventually ended the career of one of America's most powerful congressmen. When police stopped the automobile of Arkansas Democrat Wilbur D. Mills, one of Mills's passengers, a burlesque performer with the stage name Fanne Foxe, dove into the Tidal Basin – and into Washington folklore.

Before long the details of Mills's alcoholism, extramarital relationship with Foxe, and bizarre behavior were splashed onto the front pages. Mills lost first his chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee and then his seat in Congress, choosing retirement in 1976 rather than a difficult reelection campaign. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/special/clinton/frenzy/mills.htm

2. How about this crazy suggestion
Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 07:57 AM by rpannier
stiffening penalties for and enforcement of the laws against stealing from the state coffers (I think we call that embezzelment).
As to halting the decline in morality...How about arresting more of the pervs who look for 13 year old girls.
IMO that'd be a great place to start.

13. If you don't aready know what "lots of sex" is,
perhaps you should get out there and do some personal research on the subject.

I've even found some eager research assistants for you. ;-)

9. But how would we deal with
Dem Jimmy Carter's scenario of "lust in the heart." Let's all have a rally for that "old Adam" so we can wipe out "thought" completely. That would catch more than Republicans I'm thinkin'. Oops, there those brain cells go again.....

I thought the "perfect" morality police considered all sins equally repugnant and worthy of ETERNAL damnation. Hmmmm.......

12. Yes, the world has gone stark raving mad.
Why not address the real problem then? Why not make some big nasty penalties for those who steal gov't money?

And why am I so very sure that it won't be the male gov't officials who feel the sting of this?
