Rumsfeld Defending Comments Made In Salt Lake City
http://kutv.com/local/local_story_244192548.html

WASHINGTON Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld reached out to Democrats late Friday, opening up the door for them to retract their stinging indictment of him as Pentagon chief.

In a letter to Congress's top Democrats, Rumsfeld said recent remarks he made during a speech in Salt Lake City were misrepresented by the media, including by The Associated Press. Rumsfeld said he was “concerned” by the reaction of Democrats, many of whom called for his resignation and said he was treading on dangerous territory.

“Thought and careful preparation went into what I said,” Rumsfeld wrote in the letter. “It is absolutely essential for us to look at lessons of history in this critical moment in the war on terror. I was honored by the reception my statements received from our veterans.”

Pelosi, D-Calif., had said: “If Mr. Rumsfeld is so concerned with comparisons to World War II, he should explain why our troops have now been fighting in Iraq longer than it took our forces to defeat the Nazis in Europe.”

1. In another thread
a very preceptive DUer mentioned that Rumsfeld is the lighting rod to divert attention from *. When things get bad, Rummy goes into the fray and says something to get everyone worked up and distracted. I thought it a very interesting point.

18. I reality, they all take turns taking the heat
We see the same thing with Condi. She comes out swinging for a couple of news cycles, then she disappears and someone else steps up to take the heat. Bushco uses their people like a baseball Manager uses the bull pen.

4. One very strange line in the story
"...opening up the door for them to retract their stinging indictment of him as Pentagon chief."
Don't know about anyone else, but that sounds like sort of a strange thing for someone to say, since Rummy brought it on himself. If he put "thought and careful preparation" into his remarks, then that indicates he knows EXACTLY what he was saying, just as the rest of his fellow assholes do. Why in the world would any Democrat out there want to retract any indictment? Methinks he's in deep doodoo, knows it, but cannot bring himself to apologize because he's an...asshole.

7. This old fool needs to understand that while history
may be instructive on many points, one of the reasons his approach in Iraq is such a miserable failure is that not only did the top decision makers (Rummy and crowd) not understand the sociopolitical situation, they also were living in the past or in some dreamworld where the win was going to come quickly and cleanly as a result of the flash and dash of "Shock and Awe."

11. Rummy needs to watch McNamara in "Fog of War", and then realize...
...that he also will go down in history as an infamous, villianous, bungling SoD who caused incalculable harm to the United States. It will be a crime itself if this man is not tried for war crimes.

Edited on Fri Sep-01-06 10:30 PM by Shakespeare
Oh, fuck that! And what bullshit wording in that paragraph--Rumsfeld neither apologized NOR reached out. Why the holy fuck should any of us retract what we've had to say to him?

Rummy, go fuck yourself with a big, sharp stick, you vertically challenged piece of shit.

Columbus, OH

Dear Mr Secretary,

Eat shit and die. You called me either a nazi or a nazi sympathizer for doing
what America is supposed to support, freedom of speech. So take your
tired ass to Iraq and look for the WMDs you said you know where they are
so it should not be a problem.

"We know where they are ..... they are around Tikrit and north, south, east
and west of it."

Happy hunting.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

BTW double snaps to Boxer

“Nothing can change the fact that Secretary Rumsfeld insulted the patriotism of the American people,
and he needs to be held accountable for it,” Boxer said Friday.

21. "The reason that you find some of these fascist lunatics involved
with magic and occult sciences and heavy, heavy, symbology and all that...is because within these secret societies, they are dealing with death as life."
John Rappoport

There are a lot of fascist lunatics and secret societies in the BFEE (both in and out of uniform) that are being named and spoken about openly-their greatest fear is exposure of the truth about their crimes.
