Annan tells Iran Holocaust is undeniable

TEHRAN (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan told Iranians the Holocaust was "an undeniable historical fact" on Sunday after meeting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who caused outrage in the West when he said it was a "myth".

Annan also condemned an exhibition of Holocaust cartoons in Tehran that was staged by an Iranian newspaper in retaliation for the September publication of caricatures of the Muslim Prophet Mohammad in Danish and other European newspapers.

...

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi also told a separate news conference the Holocaust was "not a sacred issue that we cannot touch" and said a Holocaust conference would be held in Iran in the autumn.

"I have seen those camps myself. When I was an ambassador, I visited several of these camps. In my opinion, there has been a lot of exaggeration going on," Asefi said

2. Kofi Annan is working for peace and he wants his efforts to...
prevent millions of innocent human beings from being either massacred, or tortured to death just to make the already filthy rich extremists richer.

Wish there'd be many more like him long before the crop stop growing... :applause:

He sure won't do it all alone.

Time is runnin' away.

4. Perhaps he could add that
the impending American Holocaust will be evident as voters registered as Democrats get to wear a donkey patch over their breasts. That should appease him.

Bush believes the holocost never happened and he once told a reporter that Jews are going to Hell.

8. Did he deny it?
Or is this a little like the "wipe Israel off the map" distortion going around? I am no fan of Ahmadinejad, but neither am I a fan of mistruths being forced upon us by the media in a continual bombardment of propaganda, softening us up for some war against Iran that people will be readier to accept if they can pin these sort of claims on the fundamentalist and outspoken leader of that country.

Some of you may be interested in this article at Info Clearing House:

The assertion that Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust thus is wrong in more than one aspect. He does not deny the Holocaust, but speaks of denial itself. And he does not speak of denial of the Holocaust, but of denial of the Myth of Holocaust. This is something totally different. All in all he speaks of the exploitation of the Holocaust. The Myth of Holocaust, like it is made a subject of discussion by Ahmadinejad, is a myth that has been built up in conjunction with the Holocaust to - as he says - put pressure onto somebody. We might follow this train of thoughts or we might not. But we cannot equalize his thoughts with denial of the Holocaust.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article12790.htm

Whether you agree with him or not is not my point. What I am concerned about is the validity of the claim that he called it a myth.

9. Annan Snubbed, Ignored in Iran Meeting
The U.N. chief got little satisfaction Sunday at the close of his trip to Tehran, snubbed by Iran's leader over international demands to stop enriching uranium and ignored in warnings not to incite hatred by questioning the Holocaust.

In a provocative move on the final day of Kofi Annan's two-day visit, Iran announced it would host a conference to examine what it called exaggerations about the Holocaust, during which more than 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

In June, the six nations offered Iran a package of economic and diplomatic incentives to limit its nuclear program. Iran didn't respond until Aug. 22, rejecting the condition that it stop enriching uranium before talks. The content of its response has not been made public.

11. Stuck in the middle with U (N)
Clowns to the left, jokers to the right...

Except Iran's jokers are nothing to jest at, and the clowns are hardly funny.

So we're stuck in the middle...

Well I don't know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain't right,
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you.

Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
And I'm wondering what it is I should do,
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you're proud that you're a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please.... Please.....

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But I can see that it makes no sense at all,
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor,
'Cause I don't think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

Well you started out with nothing,
And you're proud that you're a self made man,
And your friends, they all come crawlin,
Slap you on the back and say,
Please.... Please.....

Well I don't know why I came here tonight,
I got the feeling that something ain't right,
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs,
Clowns to the left of me,
Jokers to the right, here I am,
Stuck in the middle with you,
Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
Stuck in the middle with you.

18. Can someone please enlighten me as to WHY in the world Iran would do so???
Why would they give up their program? Why?

North Korea provides the perfect blueprint on how to deal with the US. Get a bomb, and tell us to fuck off. We wont attack a nuclear power, for fear that Tel Aviv would be served up a nuke.

So, WHY would they give up? They have NO reason to. Iraq gave up its program and look what happened to it.

Does anyone think it is remotely in their best interests to give up the program? It simply isn't. If they really did give up their program, Bush would say they were lying, and given that it is impossible to prove a negative (just as in Iraq), we would be bombing the neutered country anyway, in order to make life less scary for our beloved Israel.

They are crazy. They are also crazy like a fox. They are baiting the US into another debacle we cannot possibly win. They are baiting the US into spending the very last of our credibility, lives and wealth on threatening a war we cannot possibly wage or win.

Don't get me wrong - Iran's prez is an ass. Do remember however that he emerged as a candidate to replace their more moderate former prez as a DIRECT response to our Chimperor's PNAC threats. They have the internet too, and they knew the Criminal Cabal's plans as well as those of us here on DU do.

19. Agreed...and well said. In fact the U.S. has lost already, because
Edited on Mon Sep-04-06 12:07 AM by Dover
there is no acceptable angle to go at this from, except perhaps a retreat. Retreats, while giving the appearance of weakness, can in fact also be good strategy. We will not be able to stop Iran's rise as a regional power (economically and geo-strategically) short of a nuclear holocaust and the stirring up of China and Russia.

Our 'credibility' has been in decline for some time...too many have suffered at the hands of U.S. global policy, aggression and greed already. And many were already seething about our first Gulf War. All the bullying and brute aggression has only worked against us, not made us appear stronger. In poker it's called a bluff. And we've just been called on it. We've lost credibility at home and abroad at a time when we needed it more than ever. It's a much more powerful currency than money or arms.

We are going to have to adjust to our new position within the changing global shift in power.
In many ways this seemed inevitable, or at least given the current situation as set up by Bushco. And perhaps better policies in the past might have changed our current dilemma, but it's also a natural and cyclical change...however unpleasant.

Strange notion that Iran's ownership of a nuclear weapon might actually help to KEEP the peace...at least for now. But probably true. In fact I said as much, many months ago. Unfortunately this is our predicament.

I think this shift in power poses the greatest danger to Europe who is surrounded by Russia, China and Iran, without much protection should those three become aggressive.

20. P.S. - I think Bushco or the next administration will go into Syria.
A last ditch effort to put the squeeze on Iran, and eliminate another threat on Israel's borders at the same time. If/when that fails, that will likely be the furthest we go. But anything is possible right now because we are standing on the precipice...

It seems clear that Iran will NOT give up it's nukes, and sanctions would not be very effective. So where will we go from there? Right now Syria is 'making nice' and being cooperative but also stands firmly with Iran.

22. LOL the OTHER article goes into great detail about this being the iranian
response to the western demonization of the muslims that occurred several months ago.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060904/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iran_nuclear

In a provocative move on the final day of Kofi Annan's two-day visit, Iran announced it would host a conference to examine what it called exaggerations about the Holocaust, during which more than 6 million Jews were killed by the Nazis.

The move was sure to draw new international condemnation of Iran's stance on Jews. Hours after the announcement, Annan repeated his displeasure over an exhibition in Tehran of cartoons mocking the Holocaust that was opened as a response to Western caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

snip

The Holocaust exhibit is being held to underline outrage over Prophet Muhammad caricatures in Western media. Islam forbids picturing Muhammad at all, but Muslims also were angered by the cartoons' negative tone, such as one showing the prophet wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse.

snip

"On the nuclear issue, the president reaffirmed to me Iran's preparedness and determination to negotiate" a solution to the nuclear confrontation, Annan said at the news conference.

However, Ahmadinejad "reiterated that he did not accept suspension before negotiations," the U.N. chief said, conveying Iran's rejection of a condition set by the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany.

In June, the six nations offered Iran a package of economic and diplomatic incentives to limit its nuclear program. Iran didn't respond until Aug. 22, rejecting the condition that it stop enriching uranium before talks. The content of its response has not been made public.
