Sudan orders African troops out of Darfur

Sudan's regime sought to remove the only international military presence in Darfur yesterday when it demanded the withdrawal of all African Union troops from the war-torn region.

The AU, an alliance of all 53 African countries, has 5,000 troops and 2,000 civilian staff in Darfur. Crippled by incompetence and lack of resources, the mission has largely failed to protect the population.

But it has recorded numerous attacks on civilian targets mounted by Sudanese government forces and their allies from the notorious Janjaweed militia. Violence, starvation and disease have killed 300,000 people and two million more have been displaced in three years of fighting.

On Thursday, the United Nations passed Resolution 1706, calling for the deployment of a fully fledged peacekeeping mission in Darfur. Sudan immediately rejected this measure but the AU supported it and agreed to hand over to a UN force. This has given Khartoum the pretext to demand the AU's withdrawal at the end of this month.

So the UN finally grants a full set of feathers to the peacekeeping force (presumably the writer meant 'full-fledged'), but the main problem is still there: not yet fledged, fully fledged, or in full moult, the peacekeeper mission suffers from a turkey of a charter.
