Democrats see support for anti-Rumsfeld vote

Democrats see support for anti-Rumsfeld vote

By Susan Cornwell Mon Sep 4, 1:13 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A resolution demanding the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld after he compared
Iraq war critics to Nazi appeasers has strong support among U.S. Senate Democrats, a senior Democrat said on Sunday.

A resolution against Rumsfeld, long a lightning rod for criticism of the Iraq war, would struggle to be passed by the Republican-controlled Senate and would anyway not be binding on the administration of
President George W. Bush.

But Democrats, who have a strong chance to win back control of at least one chamber of Congress in November mid-term elections, will use it to send a message that the administration's policies in Iraq are failing, New York Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) said........

1. Wonderful, but they will be back at work for a very short time before
they break to hit the campaign trail again. I think Repukes are going to try to ram through their pet projects under the heading of National Security. Let's hope Dems don't "waste" too much time and energy on Rummy that they let the Republican agenda slide right through. They've got the Defense spending bill, DHS financing, and legalizing *'s warrantless wiretapping along with his military tribunals/detainee treatment on the docket.

Will Dems fight to protect the Constitution at the risk of looking weak on security? Will they be able to change the focus to domestic issues that are important to the middle-class?

While I'd love to see the no confidence vote on Rummy, I'm not sure this is the time.

2. I'd prefer that he remain until Dumbyass is out.
He'll prove to be the rethugs' ruin.

4. He is the worst of the worst.
No balls, covers his ass more than doing the right thing, won't listen, stubborn, dangerously wrong, hated by the military. He really needs to go. The problem is that Bush would probably not hire anyone better.

6. Exactly why he sould stay...
If Dumbyass hires someone else, they won't have the reputation behind them that Rummy has; and people will be more likely to forget, by election day, the full spectrum of the atrocities committed by this regime.

12. scary thought
Whomever ended up as Rummy's replacement, they couldn't possibly undo the damage that jackass has done. They should leave him alone until they can put him on trial for war crimes.

3. We'll probably get Chafee and Hagel too.
That's still not enough votes. Hopefully there's a few other pukes available.

7. Very good political move.

Purpose is not to oust Rumsfailed. George Rex wouldn't fire him anyway, he's too loyal.

The goal is to point out to the public how unfit Rumsfailed is for the job, and by extension King George and the rest of the repuglicans are.

Rumsfailed staying in the job after the vote is the best of all possible worlds.

13. Long overdue. We need more questioning of the * admin. Headlines!
Otherwise, the dems have no presence, and are accused of being impotent.

We should be kicking up way more dirt than this.

9. Leave Rummy where he is for now
Let the weight of incompetence help drag down Bush and by extension the other Republicans. After we win in November, impeach Bush and Cheney, put the Democratic Speaker in the White House, and start mass firings immediately.

Rummy in power for a few more months may well be the lesser of two evils, especially since anybody BushCo is likely to appoint as SecDef will be from the same idealogical bent and just as incompetant. Bush had a chronic inability to pick people that are good at they jobs they inhabit.

Did I say 'good'? I meant 'barely adequate'.

10. This is such a chickenshit thing to do. Who is his CIC? This is their
way of getting around holding Bush, and themselves, accountable.

Why aren't they calling for Bush's head for lying to Congress to get us into a war? It's a treasonable offense.

11. Dont think chucklenuts could fire rummy even if he wanted to
since rummy and cheney are the ones calling the shots.

But regardless, wouldnt such a bill have to get past either Frist in the Senate or Hastert in the House? Cant imagnine that they would let it get to the floor even if all the dems signed on.
