LAT: Killings in Baghdad Escalate Over Past Week
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-090406iraq,0,6401973.story?coll=la-home-headlines

The number of killings in the Iraq capital escalated last week despite an American-led crackdown, with morgue workers receiving as many bodies as they had during the first three weeks of the month combined.

At least 334 people, including 23 women, were slain in Baghdad between Aug. 27 and Sept. 2, according to morgue figures provided by Ministry of Health officials. Most of the victims had been kidnapped, tortured, hogtied and shot.

During the week, at least 394 other people were killed around Iraq in other types of violence, including bombings, mortar attacks and gunfights, Iraqi authorities said.

The spike in violence followed an announcement by U.S. and Iraqi officials at the beginning of the week that the number of killings in the capital had dramatically fallen during the month, from more than 1,800 in July. Although August as a whole was still less violent than the month before, last week's killings suggested that death squads were still able to move about Baghdad despite checkpoints and curfews.

Today, the mutilated, handcuffed and blindfolded bodies of another 33 men were found in various Baghdad neighborhoods, according to authorities.

1. W brought this slaughter to the Iraqis
They had done nothing and were never a threat to us. His hands are bloody. Saddam kept sectarian violence under control and had established a secular government.

Our U.S. troops are also seeing an increase in tragedy at www.icasualties.org

4. This turn of events really wasn't supposed to happen. As late as
last week the generals interviewed by NPR claimed that the latest "crackdown" in Baghdad would produce real measurable results.

5. No doubt these are same type of "real, measurable results"
that were "produced" when Saddam was captured, the Hussein brothers (and 14-year-old nephew) were killed, and al-Zucchini, a.k.a. "The Lizard" (for his ability to regrow lost appendages) was killed in a bombing raid that blew everything in his vicinity to smithereens but amazingly left his body intact.

6. Looks like they were bragging about those "results" as late
as last week. Too bad August has so many extra days.

7. Violence is the only result of a failed policy in Iraq
None of us should be surprised that the violence continues to destroy countless lives and produce unchecked human suffering. Sectarian violence will continue and this Administration (particularly the pernicious quartet of Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Dick Cheney, and Douglas Feith) needs to realize that they bear full and total responsibility for every life lost and every life touched. My question to them would be, in the words of John Lennon, "Ah, how do you sleep? Ah, how do you sleep at night?"
