Calderon named Mexico's president-elect

MEXICO CITY - Felipe Calderon became president-elect of Mexico on Tuesday, two months after disputed elections, when the nation's top electoral court voted unanimously to reject allegations of fraud and certify his narrow victory.

His leftist rival, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, had said he would not recognize the ruling. His supporters wept as the decision was announced and the courthouse shook as protesters set off fireworks outside.

"This has been fraudulent from start to finish," said Claudio Martinez, 23.

Calderon, staying out of sight at the ruling party offices, now must win over millions of Mexicans angry that President Vicente Fox didn't make good on promises of sweeping change — and fend off thousands of radicalized leftists who say they will stop at nothing to undermine his presidency.

2. I await the reaction of the Mexican population.

Of course, we'll never see it in the American media. Down the memory hole. Like Alice and the rabbit.

11. Some of the people are at their whits end..
Some supporters are calling for a violent resistance as quoted by this Calderon opponent:

"In the Zocalo plaza, thousands in a month-old protest camp chanted: "Sorry Felipe, the people don't want you!"

"Taking up arms is the only way," said Angel Sinsun, 80. "They'll never give us power with peaceful resistance or with negotiations."

I hope it doesn't end up into a bloddy civil war, but is resolved peacefully.

12. I share your hope. But when in history have the powerful given up

power willingly. They will hold on to it until it is taken from them. It is ever thus.

13. I wholeheartedly agree
It's when the people lose all hope for fairness in their government, that, in their desparation to be heard, will turn to violence. The masses can only be controlled for so long, then they will forcibly throw off those shackles. I sincerely hope that the CalderBush juntas will realize this before it is too late.

CEPR ADDS UP AVAILABLE RECOUNT DATA, FINDS SIGNIFICANT VOTE REDUCTION FOR CALDERON

Result Could Explain Electoral Authorities' Reluctance to Release Recount Data

For Immediate Release: September 2, 2006

Contact: Mark Weisbrot, 202-746-7264
Dan Beeton, 202-293-5380 x 104; 202-256-6116 (cell)

WASHINGTON - The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) has found a significant loss of votes for PAN presidential candidate Felipe Calderón in a sample of recounted ballots.

Adding up the numbers for 1,706 ballot boxes (casillas) shows a loss of 1,362 votes for Felipe Calderón. Andrés Manuel López Obrador of the PBT shows a gain of 77 votes.

"This is inexplicably one-sided, with Calderón losing votes but López Obrador not losing any," said CEPR Co-Director Mark Weisbrot. "It is also a significant percentage of votes in an election this close."

The 1,362 votes lost by Calderón represent 0.54 percent of his votes in these ballot boxes.

The result for the whole group of recounted ballot boxes would likely show a similar percentage, since the above ballot box totals were chosen randomly from the documents posted on the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) web site. The ballot box totals compiled by CEPR comprise 14.4 percent of the 11,839 ballot boxes that were recounted.

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) has been searching through many thousands of pages in 375 documents released over the past week by the TEPJF, for numbers on the recount conducted by the TEPJF from August 9 to August 13. The process is laborious but most of the results appear to be buried in these documents.

In other words, the full recount results might be available but it takes several days of research to find and compile the numbers for 11,839 ballot boxes scattered among many thousands of pages of documents.

Although the recount was completed nearly three weeks ago, the TEPJF has refused to release the numbers showing how the candidates' vote totals were changed by the recount. This contrasts sharply to the procedure followed for the preliminary and second vote tallies in July, when the results were made public immediately.

"This certainly casts doubt on the electoral authorities' decision to reject a full recount," said Weisbrot. "And it makes the TEPJF's decision not to release the recounted vote totals look even worse."*

See also CEPR's most recent paper examining the "adding up" errors in the vote count: http://www.cepr.net/publications/mexico_discrepancies_2006_08.pdf

*Last Monday the TEPJF released the results of its annulment of 237,736 votes; many press accounts mistakenly reported these numbers as the results of the recount, which they were not. The ballot boxes where votes were annulled are not the same as those which were recounted. See http://www.trife.org.mx/consultas/boletines/archivos/079-2006.html.

The Center for Economic and Policy Research is an independent, nonpartisan think tank that was established to promote democratic debate on the most important economic and social issues that affect people's lives. CEPR's Advisory Board of Economists includes Nobel Laureate economists Robert Solow and Joseph Stiglitz; Richard Freeman, Professor of Economics at Harvard University; and Eileen Appelbaum, Professor and Director of the Center for Women and Work at Rutgers University.

4. Thanks for the link.
It's obvious the TRIFE is corrupted and covering for Calderon. I hope the Mexican people don't take it lying down like we did.

7. Yeah, this stinks to high heaven.

The trife is essentially saying (but not out loud): Oh! looks like, in these boxes we've recounted, there are too many votes for Calderón in relation to López Obrador, as indeed the aggrieved party complained. No problem! we'll just annul all of these votes (for both sides). Result: overall election result largely unchanged...

Talk about whitewash.

But, on the other hand: are any of these politicians and their politics really worth possible violent social upheaval, or should Mexicans seek to play a longer, more patient game?

Sure, by contrast the comparable situation in the USA looks to have already gone way too far...

8. What are the TRIFE judges' party affiliation?
I read somewhere that none of these judges belonged to Obrador's party. Their affiliation is with the other two conservative parties.

Can someone find me a link to this info. I wish I remember where I read it. Obviously our corporate media is going out of its way to bury this important info.

when the mierda hits the ventilador? Canada's already fallen to the neocons. So the entire North American continent (plus the Hawaiian archipelago) has basically been declared a freedom-free zone. :(

10. The people MUST rise up against the criminals
It's to the point where maybe the people need to take control of the congress, and insert AMLO into the office he deserves. Calderon, Fox, and the TRIFE in their pockets need to go into either Jail, or exile. Their choice.

14. Mexico Court Declares Calderon Winner of Disputed Election, Lopez Obrador
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/06/1359233

On Tuesday, Mexico's top electoral court declared conservative candidate Felipe Calderon the winner of the disputed presidential elections. This ruling comes two months after voters first cast their ballots in Mexico's closest race ever. Rival candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has said he will never recognize Calderon's victory and has vowed to form a parallel government. We go to Mexico City for a report.

I wonder why, this is not reporting on MSM news? :puke: :puke: :puke:
