Bush to unveil proposal on Guantanamo detainees

WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - President George W. Bush plans to unveil proposed legislation on Wednesday to set a structure for conducting trials of foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, White House officials said.

The Supreme Court in June rejected as illegal the military tribunal system set up by the Bush administration to try Guantanamo prisoners, most of whom were captured in Afghanistan.

The court said the tribunals -- an alternative legal system -- lacked congressional authorization and did not meet U.S. military or international justice standards.

...

The White House declined to give details about the legislative proposal. Unveiling of the proposal will coincide with a speech Bush is to give at the White House on terrorism, the third in a series on the topic he began last week.

2. I'll be watching...
I know, in my very core - at the center of my very being - that America will justify her war crimes...and many people will accept those justifications because they are just so tired of all the conflict and death...anything to "move on" and "get on with life"...and I am sickened by it.

4. The AG's Support for Military Tribunals
Something flickered for a moment and then it was gone. In his 2005 swearing in ceremony, Al Gonzalez espoused, "Undeniably, the Attorney General is a member of the President's Cabinet, a part of his team. But the Attorney General represents, also, the American people, and his first allegiance must always be to the Constitution of the United States." In his latest efforts to "support" the most important document on freedom ever written, the United States Constitution, he again fails wretchedly. He appears more inclined to support the administration's dogma of, "If we think it's right, by God's (I use this term intentionally) will, it must be!”, than seriously protecting our rights. The Tribunal Plan proposed by this administration is but another transparent attempt to circumvent the freedoms that separate us from the rest of the world. This dogma, shrouded in the rhetoric of protecting our "freedoms and way of life", leaves each of us with less than we started with 5 years ago. If Attorney General Gonzalez spent less time sniffing around the droppings of this administration and acted more the responsible public servant he promised to be, our freedoms would be less in doubt and more assured.
