(Max) Cleland Vows Vets Will Stand Their Ground

http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=71769

ATLANTA, Sept. 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Former U.S. Senator Max Cleland told viewers of "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" on CNN today that "Veterans will stand their ground this fall during the mid-term elections campaign and will not let the far-right or Republican politicians question their patriotism because they disagree with the White House on the war in Iraq."

Noting that it's been common practice to brand critics of the war as "unpatriotic, or appeasers in the war on terror," Cleland who lost his senate seat from Georgia in the face of such attacks two years ago, added, "We won't be swift-boated this time like we were in 2004."

Cleland was referring to attacks on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and himself on the 2004 elections when the Democrats' war records were unjustifiably questioned by a small but well-financed group of veterans.

He also added that similar attempts are now underway to do to U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-PA "what these far-right Republicans did to us in the last election."

1. You're damned skippy we will.
I may never have been "in country", but I did stand up and volunteer to wear the uniform when I came of age. I will NOT be called unpatriotic by a chickenhawk. I WILL NOT.

3. Cleland and Murtha,

true patriots who deserve a helluva lot better than they've gotten from
the play-soldiers in power. I hope other vets are listening this time around. Cleland has really nailed the disgraceful swiftboating with these comments.

that had unreliable software, I am glad to see him up and going after them again. Go, Max,
Go. Old soldiers never die, they just attack like pit bulls those who would take our
freedoms away.

8. Sorry, I get upset that they are still trying to smear him
don't they ever give up, not only did they rig the vote, they brought up all that terror
crap, how can you accuse anyone that has made the sacrifice that he has as being soft on
terror. I am tired of them smearing real heroes while they continue to dive into the
muck for a few more dollars from the bulging pork barrel known as the US treasury.

11. Of all the evil, gutless things BushCo's chickenhawks have done...
...smearing veterans makes me the most angry. I swear sometimes I think I'm going to stroke out I get so goddamned mad.

If they don't pay for anything else, they need to pay for this. Let's throw them down the Capitol steps on their asses. :kick:

13. Yeah! Max Cleland found his fire again!
I had read here on DU recently that Cleland was seeking help with depression...Can't say I was too surprised since this is a man who physically has had to deal with a lot and has been put through the wringer politically, not to mention watching all the shit going on these days.

But it is nice to see him speaking out...glad he's still got the fire in the belly. I really like Cleland. Got to meet him during the Kerry Campaign on the road and sat next him during one of the debates. I still hope to see him someday in public office...maybe in the next administration...
