Harris wins Fla. GOP Senate nomination
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 09:35 PM by onehandle
MIAMI - U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record) overcame a campaign ridiculed even by her own party to claim the GOP nomination for the Senate on Tuesday, and Rep. Jim Davis (news, bio, voting record) held a narrow lead in the race for the Democratic nomination to succeed popular Gov. Jeb Bush.

With 48 percent of the precincts reporting, Harris had 50 percent of the vote against three relative unknowns. Attorney Will McBride ran second at 30 percent, and retired Navy admiral LeRoy Collins had 15 percent.

Nelson's huge win in November will sweep other Democrats into office.

75. A vote against Nelson is a vote for Frist, Brownback, Sanitorium +Cheney
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 09:47 AM by brg5001
With all due respect, I must differ with never_get_over_it. I contacted Sen. Nelson about the Federal Marriage Amendment, and he voted AGAINST IT because it would be the only amendment that would deny rights to a specific group of invididuals. I also asked Sen. Nelson to vote against the confirmation of Sen. Alito, and he did vote AGAINST Sen. Alito's confirmation, although not for the reasons I enumerated. Still, I was satisfied. He has also threatened to filibuster any effort to weaken laws concerning drilling off Florida's coastlines, and has insisted that the prescription drug law be modified to force Big Pharma to negotiate over pricing. Furthermore, he opposed the insertion of un-Christian know-it-alls into the personal affairs of the Schiavo family, and he supports the creation of a nationwide approach to disaster insurance that will address the legal blackmail now perpetrated by the reinsurance industry.

I do fault Sen. Nelson for voting in favor of the Flag Protection Amendment. But we must recognize that by not supporting a Democratic majority, we end up with a Republican majority that puts wingunts like Brownback, Sanitorium, Maccaca and Frist in charge of committees and legislation. Of course, ties are broken by Dick "Darth Vader" Cheney!

Bill Nelson's is an important voice of rationality and reason. Our other Senator, Mel Martinez, is a brown-nosing Bush loyalist who will NEVER stand up for the interests of non-elites and looks for every opportunity to bash gays, lesbians and other convenient targets of the un-Christian right.

Please reconsider, never_get_over_it. Otherwise, we may end up with Norma Desmond impersonator Katherine Harris crowing about how Jesus took control and put her in the Senate. We can't let that happen. The situtation for Democrats in Florida holding statewide office literally demands that we vigorously support Sen. Nelson for re-election and to bring out our voters for every other seat. The primaries are over. This is a critical election year and we must unite behind our candidates and get our leadership in charge of the Congress and as many statehouses as possible.

76. I will not reconsider
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 09:54 AM by never_get_over_it
and please for the love of GOD do not give Nelson any credit for his Alito vote because he supported cloiture and then voted against Alito - voting for cloiture was as good as voting for Alito. The flag burning amendment would be enough to not vote for him too -

I have heard Brian Moore speak in an interview with Bob Kincaid and I really liked him and therefore will vote for him. If I thought for one moment that Katherine Harris could win this thing I would reconsider - but the repunk leaders don't even like her - I really believe there is not a chance she can win and therefore I will not vote for someone I CAN NOT STAND - Bill Nelson.

on edit btw: thank you for your well thought out post - unlike others who just said I learned nothing from 2000 and why don't I just donate to the GOP. I completely understand where you're coming from I felt the same way in 2000 about Nader - but this is not the Presidency and I don't think it will even be close and I just can't hold my nose again - when I have the Brian Moore alternative - it is bad for my soul.....

I do understand your point. I am very disappointed that Bill has not sharply criticized the administration's rhetoric at the very least, concerning the war in Iraq. He simply needs to stop being so nice to everyone and give the Republicans the sucker-punch they deserve.

87. Understood and Respected But I So Disagree...
Gosh these third parties are just so helpful to the BushCo crooks and liars. Truthfully the Green party helped put him in office as much as Kat Harris did.

If BushCo were just Republicans or Conservatives or whatever, sure, I'd vote 3rd party more often but JhC, they are SOOO evil and so dangerous to our very survival...that someone like Nelson becomes a really good choice in comparison, IMO. The only way to get these weazles out is to make them a minority party.

We should be reaching out to the Greens and incorporating them. They Republicans are the only ones that stole that election. Turning around and shouting at the greens because our party was running in '1994-appease the repukes/inspire no one' mode is what lost votes to the greens.

23. This race will tighten
Edited on Tue Sep-05-06 10:10 PM by Ignacio Upton
Straight-ticket Republicans will vote for her as soon as they find out she has an "R" next to her name. They don't care if she's a Starbuck's-swilling, campaign-collapsing, corrupt dingbat. And even though she didn't get daddy's money, she'll still have enough to run ads. Look for the race to go to 60%-40% or even 55%-45% in a month. That is, unless Nelson starts running ads.

34. your title speaks for me, too
but I will vote for Nelson, happily. We're in a rather shitty situation in FL, there's so many kool aid drinkers, and sadly, the poor has never voted at the same clip the rich have, and won't until it's made extremely easy to vote for everyone.

Bill is definitely a conservative Democrat. However, he has his good points, and just a few bad, imo. He's afraid of losing votes for appearing too liberal, or he isn't really very liberal, I'd tend to take him on his word that he's not a liar typical politician and is just not as liberal as we'd like him to be, but his ethics are unquestioned imho, and that's why I 100% endorse him to all I speak to. Batshit Crazy is the alternative, ya know.

No choices in Texas these days... it'll have to be hold my nose

Advocating against Democratic candidates is prohibited.

So anybody on this board can tell you what to do with your vote.

And if you waste it on an independent at a time when our country is in peril, then you can stick your vote up your ass.

and as I said, he got to be a senator because of that slightly conservative tilt. He is only against a few issues I'm for. He's a very nice man. I hope the lady will vote for him that said she won't. We need her.

Kathy (nutso) will get at least 43% of the vote.. there's that many nutjobs down here... all she has to do is constantly complain about gays molesting children and crazy shit like that and koolaid drinkers will vote for her.

folks, there's a LOT of rebel flags in trucks down here. and she flaunts her breast enlargements and most of them will vote for her after watching her batshit crazy ads slamming sensitive treatment of all citizens and her Pro-War stance against the "towel heads"...

There is a huge base of evangelical Christians in Florida that will vote for her regardless of her stance on any issue as long as she is pro Bush and Pro Life she will get their votes... Now how suppressed will the GOP turn out be in Florida that of course is the Key to her loss. I think if the GOP can stir up their base Nelson may have some difficulty ahead. He is not a shoe in and hasn't really done anything important in his last 4 years. Barbra Boxer and John Kerry Democrats he is not he voted No to John Kerry's troop redeployment bill and he voted Yes to authorizing Military Force in Iraq so if enough Democrats feel like he is not worthy of being supported then in fact he will lose to Katherine Harris..... So take nothing for granted hold your nose and vote.

this race.

It looks right now as if Jennings has won, although I do not know if the race has been called. I'm not sure where those precincts are in the district either. But the lead appears to be significant.

I hate Vern Buchanan and hope we can put a Democrat in that seat. It would be great if there were a Democatic Congresswoman from west-central Florida in Harris' old seat.

for granted. Not even Florida. Nelson is already losing points in a Rasmussen poll, although the loss is attributed to an increase in undecideds, while Harris only gained one point.

Campaign funding pledge continues to haunt Harris

St. Petersburg Times
After months of hearing members of even her own party second guess her run for the U.S. Senate, Katherine Harris said she would pump $10 million of her own money into her financially strapped campaign.

In an emotional announcement on national TV in March, Harris said she would use every penny her late father had left her.

Minutes later, while still in the New York studio where she made the announcement, Harris received a call from her sister. She and their brother were furious that she had not told them she was going to spend family money on her campaign, according to her former senior consultant Ed Rollins, who was with her that night.

In the days that followed, several former staffers, including Rollins, said Harris learned she would not directly receive any inheritance from her father. Instead, his assets, reported to be as much as $100 million, were left to her mother, Harriet.

Harris, a millionaire in her own right, quietly regrouped and changed her plan, telling employees and supporters that she was going to liquidate everything she had to fund the campaign.

70. Do you really believe the party
of the Klan can be embarrassed? Can a party that has an illiterate bone head as its leader be embarrassed? Can a party that rails against homosexuals while having many homosexuals in leadership positions be embarrassed? Can a party of ranting raving demagogues be embarrassed? Can a party that knifes veterans in the back and calls that supporting the troops be embarrassed? Can a party that calls over 60% of Americans Nazi sympathizers be embarrassed knowing their leader's grandfather was busted for laundering Nazi money in WW II? The list is endless. They have no sense of decency. They have no shame. They hate America and by extension, American ideals. Dante described a special place in the Inferno he called the Ninth Ring of the Ninth Circle reserved for the Kool-Aid drinking butt plugs we know as chicken shit, chicken hawk Republicans.

i think that nelson will win, but the seat will go to katherine harris. i think that this will be like the george bush/al gore things. we all know that al gore won, but than the courts gave it to bush. so i bet that nelson is going to win, but that there will some problem with the voting machine, thus causing the courts to step in, and ultimately giving it to harris. she did help bush in 2000, what makes you think that she won't do the same for herself?

52. Get a grip. FL is not a democracy. Harris only has to win Diebold to win.
FL is the moxt "fixed" state in the country next to GA. There's absolutely no way to know that the vote that is reported has anything remotely to do with the actual vote.

Harris could quite easily win if the machines report it so and why shdn't they? She's a Repub after all and will allow the corruption and money grabbing to go on without let. The machines are tilted for the Repubs, and they can be tilted as much as desired by the "technicians" or whoever has the keys to the back doors and programs the vote. It can be done at any level from local to the central tabulator. The laws in the state pretty much prevent recounts or audits so it could easily be that she's already won.

It might very well be that the machines gave her the primary victory in the first place. Why knows?

59. Rational people stayed home, I guess
Look, to a normal, reasonable Republican, you know, the kind that was popular BEFORE Newt & Co. took charge in 1994, Harris is crazy. I bet a lot of them stayed home, disgusted with the whole process. So the Harris vote might well represent the neocon-type hardcore vote turning out in larger numbers than the reasonable ones. I bet a lot of despairing reasonable Republicans (who actually might harbor secret desires for Dems to win and stop the maddress) will just stay home in November, leaving the voting to the angry Democrats, angry independents, and fanatical neocons. And I know there are a lot of angry Democrats and independents out there. There have to be!

78. Lady Katherine: Free entertainment for Florida's masses
Edited on Wed Sep-06-06 10:06 AM by brg5001
From: Delray Beach, Florida

Half of Florida's Republicans are economic conservatives. The other half are disgusting, anti-minority warmongering un-Christian crazies. Katherine Harris has successfully appealed to the wingnut set with her outrageous brand of religious/cultural bigotry. Howard Dean called her a criminal and that's essentially what she is, because there is no way that the chairperson of a campaign should be responsible for counting the votes in a campaign, period. She is also up to her hair in Repuke lobbyist money.

However, the anti-Harris vote was split among three candidates. She can't win in November and has been deserted by the Republican leadership because they know that her presence on the ballot hurts them. She won as expected here. But she couldn't be elected dog catcher in her own district. It's over for Katherine Harris and she's happy to play the victim all the way down.

Note that Tom Gallagher lost the Republican nomination for governor here by bashing gays and immigrants and calling the front-runner, conservative Charlie Crist a "liberal." I know -- ridiculous. However, he was beaten 2-1.

Look on the bright side: We'll all enjoy FREE ENTERTAINMENT and the possiblity of a total meltdown that still looms for Ms. Harris, Florida's tragic Citrus and Cattle Baroness and Norma Desmond/Tammy Faye/Joan Crawford impersonator.

104. My theory is the Republicans PUBLICLY distanced themselves from her
and privately supported her all the way.

Harris is TOO polarizing a figure for the Republicans to publicly support her and risk injuring others at risk. So what would Karl Rove do? He would advise the prominent GOP'ers to publicly distance themselves from her and privately do whatever he good to grease her wheels.

After all, Bush* owes her EVERYTHING. And he does pay his political debts. Had he not, Harris would have talked.

How else can one explain a Harris win in Florida that the Bushes did not support? It defies political logic.
