NYC Hotels to GOP: Sink Cruise Ship Plan
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 7:27 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) -- Faced with increasing pressure from New York City officials, industry associations and labor leaders, House Majority Leader Tom DeLay decided Tuesday to cancel plans to house guests for the 2004 Republican National Convention on a cruise ship off Manhattan, his spokesman said.

``Where we hold events for the Republican convention is not something he cares about, it's not worth spending energy on,'' said DeLay's communications director, Stuart Roy. ``He'll go to the mat on things that matter, but this does not.''

Also, Norwegian Cruise Line, which owns the ship DeLay planned to charter, said in a statement it was pulling out of the deal because it determined the use of the ship for the convention was not commercially viable."

..more at article....

Sounds like Delay wanted to have the ship for free or minimum $$$$...

What is with these people?

``Where we hold events for the Republican convention is not something he cares about, it's not worth spending energy on,'' said DeLay's communications director, Stuart Roy. ``He'll go to the mat on things that matter, but this does not.''

"Nah, Nahh. I didn't want to do that anyway!"

Nice try, Tom. I know you hate the huddled masses teeming on the New York shores... too bad you lost in your efforts to escape them amid the lap of opulent luxury.

9. The only reason I can think of for the idiots
to want to be on a ship in the harbor instead of a hotel is that they are afraid of a terror attack or protestors in the streets.
What a bunch of wimps these assholes are.

Besides there aren't enough luxury suites on board the ship to accommodate them. No way in hell is some repuke who lives in a mansion going to be happy in a tiny ordinary cruise ship cabin.

11. I'm Sorry It Happened In A Way
A cruise ship is a great way to pick up an odd virus that will make an individual deathly ill. What better way to scuttle the RNC convention by letting them do it to themselves?

18. I could see it now...
A nice little attack of amoebic dysentary, spreading like wildfire, culminating on the convention floor.

"The people of the great state of _____ proudly cast all _____ of our votes for the Once and Future Emporer, the Salvation of the United States, Our Glorious Leader, George Walker... uh, oh..."

Chet: "David, did the leader of the _____ delegation just shit in his pants?"
David: "Yes, he did, Chet. We have confirmation. As a matter of fact, it appears that many of the delegates on the floor are suffering considerable discomfort and it's not a pleasant place to be right now."

12. Republicans' NY Convention Cruise Ship Plan Sinks
Republicans' NY Convention Cruise Ship Plan Sinks
Tue December 2, 2003 10:28 PM ET

By Bill Berkrot
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A plan to use a cruise ship as a floating hotel during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York was scuttled on Tuesday by the liner's owner, Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, after an outcry by city Democrats and hotel and restaurant groups.

"This evening I spoke to Colin Veitch, the President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line and he informed me that NCL had determined that it would not be commercially viable to use the Norwegian Dawn as part of the Republican National Convention," Bloomberg said in a statement.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, of Texas, had said he wanted to charter the Norwegian Dawn as a floating hotel and entertainment center for delegates descending on the city in August for the convention, which is expected to culminate with President Bush being nominated to seek a second term.

Proponents of the scheme had argued that the ship would be safer and more private than a Manhattan hotel.

But with New York's economy still struggling to recover from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, critics said the plan would have deprived the city of millions of dollars that would instead be spent aboard a foreign ship. (snip/...)

After many martinis the GOP COW of the hour flaunts her/his stuff.

Priceless picture. And as an aside does anyone else here think Bush is a cross dresser/drama queen? NO disrespect to drama queens everywhere on the planet but this asshole just screams DRAMA. The fetish about uniforms is a dead give away.

His closet is very well locked. Mommy Babs holds the key. Tightly. Up her ass.

15. The financial impact of this convention
One of the reasons the convention was supposedly scheduled in NYC in the first place was to infuse money into an economy that was devastated by 9/11.

Several months ago, one of the convention organizers came into town to speak to NYC & Co. (convention bureau) members about the business opportunities that the Republican meeting would bring for hotels, restaurants, tourism, retail shopping and other businesses in NY. Although the invitations to the event were send out on rather short notice, hundreds of business owners and managers showed up to hear about the convention's itinerary. With many businesses struggling to meet their payrolls, NY's business community was counting on the promise of the Republicans to bring an infusion of cash into the local economy.

That's why this cruise ship thing was such a kick in the stomach. It's obvious that Delay and crew see New York and New Yorkers as the enemy now. It's blatantly clear that they don't give a damn about this city at all, except for using it as yet another photo op.

It was interesting to read about the reaction of the Republican convention bureau leader (and ex-Giuliani girlfriend) to the initial news about the cruise ship. She holds a job that requires diplomacy, yet you could tell she was furious at the decision. She was trying to muffle her public statements but anger seethed through them.

These guys sure don't seem to care about anybody except themselves.

16. Its amazing how much the
bugman has gotten away with. He is the scariest, ugliest, most extreme rightwinger in Washington, yet he keeps getting a pass and his lackey rethugs goosestep behind him. In comparision he really makes newtie look like a teddybear, yet no one will take him on. Whats going on here?

Delay will have a ship for the GOP in NYC. The guy does not give up - he will just come at it another way, perhaps smaller scale, but he will have one.

22. Delay wanted a place where all could stay together. These guys are
really and truly afraid of average people. Their macho, swaggering b/s is all show. They know many New Yorkers see through them and they are AFRAID. They wanted the convention there for PR purposes but forgot that the people actually LIVING there have been exposed to toxins from b/s EPA reports written under duress from the WH and that the families of the 9-11 victims are relentlessly looking for the truth. They figured like most of them and their cronies, they could throw a few bucks at these folks and all would be forgotten.

Chickenhawks..I hope there are demonstrations in numbers unseen in my 52 years on earth.

Can scarcely blame Norwegian Cruise Line for bowing out, considering how much it would have cost them to paint that big red target on the side of their vessel.
