Soon after Rep. John Doolittle (R-Calif.) pulled his support of a seemingly innocuous bill that would honor a 92-year-old civil rights leader, some congressional aides started to ask why.

The bipartisan bill would name a Berkeley, Calif., post office after Maudelle Shirek, who has been hailed by some as the “the mother of progressive politics.”

In September, Doolittle endorsed the bill introduced by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). But weeks later, the Republican went to the House floor and formally withdrew his support without explanation.

Shirek is the oldest elected official in California and a granddaughter of slaves. She is vice mayor of Berkeley and serves on the City Council.

I think we all have better things to do than get our panties in a bunch over feeling slighted that someone did or didn't get an honorary recognition that means nothing except to people in the post office bored enough to read the plaque on the wall.

Besides, not to sound too republicanish - but, it seems to me like a stupid thing to do - EVER! How many tax dollars are being wasted all over the country naming and renaming post offices? They have a freakin' name: USPS

How much are our representatives being paid??? I don't want them using their goddamn time debating what to name a post office.
