MNF-I releases statement regarding explosion in Nasiriyah
BAGHDAD – “A large explosion occurred in Nasiriyah earlier today. Further investigation revealed the incident took place in a building where an illegal weapons stockpile was housed. Because ordnance is volatile and unstable, the detonation probably occurred on its own or due to terrorist mishandling. No injuries have yet been announced, but the danger posed by these caches is real, as they can easily ignite or explode and harm innocent Iraqis.
“The Multi-National Force – Iraq condemns those outside the legitimate representatives of the Iraqi people, the Iraqi government and its security forces, who would stockpile weapons and armaments. Such caches that are not under the control of the Iraqi government are a threat to the Iraqi people and their growing democracy. These terrorists who stockpile weapons are interested only in destruction, and threaten the safety of all Iraqi men, women and children. There is no justification for possessing illegal weapons stockpiles which only serve to harm the Iraqi people.
“All Iraqis want and deserve a life of security, unity, and prosperity. Illegal weapons caches and those who would use them for their undemocratic agendas are a threat to the Iraqi people. We are working with the Iraqi government and the Iraqi security forces to bring peace and stability to Iraq, so that every Iraqi, their children, and their grandchildren can enjoy a prosperous future free of conflict and fear.
“God bless the people of Iraq.”
