King wins District 8 GOP primary

After a bitter campaign that sought to define conservatism in Northeast Florida, state Sen. Jim King soundly defeated challenger Randall Terry in the Republican primary.

With 86 percent of the vote counted at midnight, King had 66.5 percent of the vote across four counties.

The race pitted King, a social moderate and fiscal conservative, against Terry, a conservative religious activist who pushed the race to the right by campaigning on issues of gay adoption, abortion and medical malpractice.

"We know what we are, and we know what we aren't," King told supporters who gathered at the Fraternal Order of Police building in Jacksonville. He added later: "You may not always like my decisions or my votes, but I can promise you I will be thinking long and hard before I make them."

Terry did not return calls to his cell phone Tuesday night. His supporters met to watch election returns in a Regency Square office building.

4. Randall Terry was also affiliated with James Kopp...

Additional evidence suggests that actions by Terry and Operation Rescue may have provoked violence at abortion clinics. As the New York Times reported on July 20, 2001, "One of his most avid followers in Binghamton was James E. Kopp, now charged in the 1998 murder of a doctor who performed abortions in Buffalo ." Kopp was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. A November 6, 1998, Times report further detailed Terry's connection to Kopp:

In July 1988, when Randall Terry drove through the night from his home in Binghamton, N.Y., to Atlanta to start the series of anti-abortion protests that would finally put his new hard-line group, Operation Rescue, onto America's front pages, James Charles Kopp was in the van riding alongside him, said former leaders of Operation Rescue.

And when Mr. Terry was arrested on the first day of Operation Rescue's "Siege of Atlanta," Mr. Kopp followed him into jail, said the leaders, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Along with more than 100 other Operation Rescue members, according to some people who were there, Mr. Kopp remained in jail for 40 days and adhered to Mr. Terry's orders not to give a real name to the police or courts.

After his release, Mr. Kopp returned to Operation Rescue's Binghamton headquarters, and was there working alongside Mr. Terry as the group's power and influence in the anti-abortion movement surged in late 1988 and 1989, according to the former leaders of Operation Rescue.

5. Gee I guess
that mass email that Alan Keyes sent out on behalf of Randall Terry via NewsMax didn't have the desired effect.

He jumped on the Save Terry Schiavo bandwagon by becoming spokesman for her parents. He was positively gleeful everytime he had a chance to blather in front of the camera. Now maybe he'll crawl back into his hole.

10. I got that email too. That was sad.
Desperation dripping from the edges. I saved it. Here are some excerpts:

"This race is so critical that it could literally be a turning point for good or for ill for conservative politics and policies, as well as the Republican Party coast-to-coast."

"...the reality is this: the leftist Rockefeller Republicans reject the beliefs and the agenda of us Ronald Reagan Republicans... they tout leftists like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Rudy Giuliani as their new poster boys."

"...but they do not want to {sic} Judeo-Christian principles that guide us on the social issues, and the love of liberty and guides us on the fiscal and foreign-policy issues to be the guiding force of our party. {sic somewhere in there}"

"Religious liberty remains under attack..."

"On one side, we have those of us who really believe in the truths of the Declaration of Independence, and the principles enunciated by and embodied in Ronald Reagan. On the other side we have of those who pay lip service to the Declaration of Independence and our beloved late President Ronald Reagan, but are secretly at war with the foundational principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Reagan Revolution."

"Duty demands that if we truly believe in the principles of Ronald Reagan, we must do everything in our power to defeat Jim King and all of the on ethical betrayals of our party the embodies as well as the treacherous elements of our party that are behind him."

"Please be one of those sacrificial heroes."

Alan must have been all frothy when he was writing that.

12. Are you a fellow First Coaster? Randall Terry did it to himself!
And nothing could make me happier than his ignominous defeat.

I counted and I have at least 38 political calls on my Caller ID and Call Wave. About two-thirds of those calls were automated calls from Randall Terry's campaign.

One time, while online, a call from the Terry headquarters came through my call wave with a real live person. So I had the call put through to my phone.

I told the lady that we wouldn't vote for Terry if our lives depended on it, and, by the way, STOP THE PHONE CALLS. They are annoying.

Not five minutes after I hung up, another Terry call came in. :grr:

My neighbor wrote an e-mail to the Terry campaign asking them to take her phone number off their calling list (she got at least three times the number of calls as my home did--two members of that family are registered Republicans while only one member is in this household). They answered back, literally, "Too bad, so sad."

On election day, there were two Terry campaign members standing in the entrance of the parking lot to the precinct, demanding that we read their "late-breaking news" about "scandalous" Jim King. I told her we didn't want it, that we were voting for Jim King. (Well, my husband was, I'm registered Dem. so I couldn't. She forced it on us anyway.

I went in and complained to the person checking IDs as we entered. He said they were the legal distance away from the entrance of the polling place, and thus could do nothing. I thought that it certainly looked like a short 100 feet, but bowed to his apparently better knowledge.

My neighbor didn't and paced off the 100 feet. When she got no satisfaction, she called the Supervisor of Elections... And athe Terry campaign woman shoved her.

Terry is either absolutely bonkers. He certainly doesn't know how to win friends and influence people (except for fellow rubber roomers) and I sincerely hope he never learns how. Considering his hubris, I doubt that he will.
